I need to remove the gearbox on my 1987 90 with retrofitted disco 200tdi for two reasons:

Firstly there is a serious oil leak from between the engine/gearbox. I suspect the rear crank seal so obviously need to drop the box in order to fix this.

Secondly I have a disco transfer box which I want to put on, and I would imagine it is far easier to just drop the whole lot and put the new transfer box on whilst its all on the ground.

However, having heard conflicting reports I am unsure whether I can actually drop the gearbox. Ive been told that you can simply drop the box, nice and simple. I have also been told from other sources that you cant drop the gearbox on a Defender, and have to remove the seatbox, transmission tunnel etc and lift it up and out through the door.

I cant see any reason why this would be the case....all the bellhousing bolts are relatively easy to reach, props are obviously easy to undo and the gearbox crossmember simply unbolts so that wont be in the way..... is there something Im missing here?!

I will be doing all the work at my mates garage with access to a ramp, engine crane etc.

Thanks

It can go down, and it can come up, going down involves less work I would say as you’re not dismantling as much up top, however handling the gearbox coming up is easier with an engine crane etc...

It's the earlier series that you have to lift em out through the cab cos the crossmember dun't come out. If you've got big tyres or a lift kit fitted you won't need ramps. Just drop the transfer an gearbox onto a thin bit of ply an drag the whole thing out from underneath

could you not take out your middle seat / cubby box and remove the panel on the seat box to hoist it back up with a crane when re-fitting? It's not like you've got to lift it high enough to have it come up and into the cab is it!?

You can drop it out, as far as i know, but to just replace the crank real oil seal its actually easier to take out the engine. Dunno bout the x-fer box though, i think theres some posts on here about it? I'm not sure. Chris, if you want a hand ill b about your way in june sometime!

I would agree with Boydy; CharlesY and I took the engine out of my 90 to fit a new clutch and it was certainly MUCH easier and quicker than the time I had the box out.

Yeah but right if he's gonna change the transfer box it int gonna be easier to take the injun out is it, cos he's still got to take both boxes out. Unless yer suggesting that he takes the whole lot out through the injun compartment, an if he does do can you video it an put it on youtube, cos it'll be a reet laff.

It is most easily removed by taking the lot out, because if you didn't you would need to split the two while still in situ.

yeh this is the thing, i would just take the engine out but as i am also swapping the transfer box over i figured it would be easier to drop the gearbox and kill two birds with one stone.

thanks for all the replies, looks like i will just be able to drop it then!
