Removing a V8 for a 200tdi. Help please!

I shortly plan to do a 200tdi transplant. I've never taken an engine out before, and my mechanical knowledge is ltd. Also Its not as straighforward as most, as I'm replacing a 3.5 SD1 V8. so the wiring for a start is not going to be like the advice given for changing from a td engine.

Can anyone help, or advise me on this? or at least point me to a link where someone has taken out a petrol V8, and put in a 200tdi diesel? As I don't want to go into it totally blind. I'm guessing most of the advice will be the same except I may have issues with the engine mount positions if they have been moved to accomondate the V8, and also adapting the wiring set up for the V8 to fit the 200tdi.

It's not a factory fitted V8, It was originally a N/A diesel that was in there before someone put in the V8 via an adapter plate to my LT77 gear box, so maybe the old wires are tied off in the engine bay somewhere? Any idea what I should look for? Any help at all will be much appriciated!!:confused:

Oh, forgot to ask. can anyone tell me where I can get a timing pin set for a 200tdi engine? I've scoured ebay and not found anything.
 
you will need to remove engine , chassis mounts ,fit 200 to gearbox without clutch line engine up in chassis to determine new mount postion , remove engine ,weld mounts in, wiring will be similar and will need lengthening /shortening to fit ,in that starter solenoid wire will do 200 ,coil feed injection pump solenoid ,temp,oil pressure etc,fuel pump for v8 remving and straight feed from tank to lift pump presumably a disco 200 ,with which you will need rad intercooler and frame assemby which needs mod to frame to fit if you have 4 or 6 bolt pas box disco pas pipes will fit with alittle fettling timing kit da3140 from britpart is good and covers all 4 cylinders but £70ish
 
Sorry can't help much. But why are you swapping out a V8? Unless you are doing big mileage a year in it, your fuel savings will be minimal.

I can without trying too much get 17mpg out of an old twin carb factory 3.5 V8. 15 pottering about, although my Uncle gets 19mpg from it.

But to get a real 30mpg out of a Tdi you'd need to drive like Miss ****ing Daisy.

Drive it the same as the V8 and you'll get a far more realistic 24-26mpg. And that's being optimistic IMO, 21-23mpg with a low of 19mpg is what I've seen from my Tdi's.

Also a good modern EFI setup like Megasquirt on a V8 should see a far more realistic 17-18mpg average with over 20 on a run.

So using current prices if you only do 3000 miles a year in a 90:

Diesel @ 24mpg = £796 or £66/month
Petrol @ 15mpg = £1236 or £103/month
Petrol @ 18mpg = £1030 or £86/month


I'm not denying a Tdi is better on fuel, but it all depends how many miles a year are being talked about. It'd be cheaper and less hassle to modernise the V8 than swap in a Tdi in. And if only doing around 3000 miles/year then it'd only cost you on average £20/month more to run.


Of course, if the OP is doing 12,000 miles a year it's a totally different story and a diesel is of course a lot cheaper to run over that distance. :)
 
i think your a tad optimistic and a tad pessimistic or very lucky and very unlucky ,all ive seen driven its nearer double the price for v8 on a run comparing v8 disco and tdi on same journey
 
I run a 200TDi conversion and see average of 32mpg and have had 36 out of out. I have up rated fuelling, turbo,exhaust and full size intercooler.

I drive it like I stole it.

Let's look at this logically. You are claiming better than officially rated mpg figures in a vehicle that pumps more fuel intote engine than stock and claim to drive it like you stole it.

This in turn means either Land Rover and everyone who has ever reviewed a TDI powered vehicle is lying. Or you are lying or you are making a calculation mistake, either on how you are working out mpg, the number of gallons used or the distance travelled. Or maybe a combo of all three.

In any case you are not bettering official figures if you are putting your foot down. Maths, physics and logic say so.
 
I went from an EFi motor on carbs and autobox to 300tdi/R380. As to costings I did 10K miles the year before I did my transplant.
I was getting 10.7 MPG out of the V8/auto on LPG which worked out @ 30p/mile
or now we burn heavy oil @ 30 MPG average that is 20p / mile

So in 12 months and including the sale of the V8 and autobox my conversion will have paid for itself.

As to the options for fitting
A 200tdi will fit your LT77, the Disco is cheaper and needs some mods, but the Defender motor just bolts in
A 300tdi fitted to a R380 will make it factory fit so easier to get standard parts, but needs new engine mounts
A 300tdi and LT77 makes it a bit of an bitsa motor in my opinion and more difficult to insure / sell

The only thing with using the R380 is you need to do something with the seatbox as the gearbox is bigger and you either change it or get a conversion kit from Keith Gott

For £48 you can get a takeoff rad frame from RJ Landrovers and just bolt it in. As to the wiring either buy a new engine loom and plug it in or buy a plug set and some lengths of coloured wire and make your own. It's not that bad as it only needs 6 wires for the diesel.

I worked out that if I hired an engine crane for the duration of the job it worked out £20 cheaper than buying one. You can then either keep it for the future or sell it on and get some money back. So unless you can borrow one something to consider.

It's a lot to take in I know, but worth while going through all the options. Above all you can do it, just plan it well and work methodically.

You'll be doing a chassis swap next !

I am merely passing on what I have recorded over time. There may be slight discrepancies due to converting from KM and recording errors on fuel uplift but not a huge amount. I think the main advantage in modding it has been that it does not have to be thrashed to drive at a reasonable speed.

Now dont go using maths, physics and logic on here............ Everyone knows Defenders will do 40mpg if tuned and driven swiftly. Landrover engineers and marketing deliberately undersold the consumption figures of the defender.

It was to make peeps feel good about the car when otherwise they would be hopping mad about its a. build quality b. reliability.

Pedantry my children would be proud of.......

Clearly I don't drive everywhere like that. But the original point which has been lost in the journey to the far side of pedantry was that it will return pretty good fuel economy over a V8.

I hear what your saying, and it's ashame I've got to take out the v8, as it runs really lovely only covering 20,000 on a rebuild by the previous owner, (I cant prove the rebuild though) plus I've very recently had a full service done on itby a good trustworthy garage i've used for years, (cost £250 on a V8), put in a new water pump, starter, rad hoses, and proper V8 rad. (all that I do have bills for) But I do want to use my landy as a daily hack, plus do lots of greenlaning, plus I'm towing a heavy caravan quite a lot, (not just the odd weekend a year), so for me it will be worth changing.

If I was only doing small miles, and not towing (that makes a hell of a differance to fuel in a V8) then I wouldn't bother. But If anyone wants a good V8 as a spare, or to do an engine swop on a knackered one, it will be going on ebay once it's out to make room, it will go as a full engine, with rad and hoses etc. But if anyone on here wants it for say £200 (rad cost over £130 odd alone) then please P.M. me, and you can either collect it, or I'll send it via a pallet (with whatever extra that cost) to where you live.

I live in Dover in kent by the way. :)
