Remove the CAT?

Wotcha guys,
I have recently posted a thread re removing the EGR - I will be doing this at the weekend, however, in posts on the subject,no one seems to have mentioned removing the catalitic converter from the exhaust system. My local independant landy dealer tells me that you need to remove the CAT to get the full benefit from removing the EGR and quotes power increases in the region of 20bhp?

Anyone else removed their CAT? And, excuse my ignorance, but - What does it do?

i've heard they also clean up yer egghost gases so we don't get sun burnt

be careful if yer remove the cat, im not 100% but it may fail the mot if yer teck it oot

It will fail the MOT. what you do is go to the local car shop, buy flexi pipe things so that you can take it out and then put it back in for the MOT. Thats what the local so called boy racers do, bunch of t!!!!s.

I have replaced the down pipe with cat on my 300 TDI 95 model with a defender 300 TDI part number ESR2297,this pipe has no flexi section in it or a hanger and it's easy to fit.it has made a differance on the running it revs better and more pull around 2000 to 3000 well worth doing.Replacing the front pipe this way you can allways change it over for the MOT if needed

Lets have a vote on it

I replaced mine with a non cat one, It didnt fail the MOT. Its not actually a cat, its a partical filter. Take it off, chuck it, save yourself a bunch of money, you dont need it.

It is not required for the MOT test, only on petrol vehicles not diesels

I took my CAT off and had no problems with the mot

Did you notice any great difference in performance when you removed the CAT?

I had quite a bit of work done to improve the performance i.e uprated inter-cooler, full through stainless exhaust, egr removed, silicone hoses fitted and a K&N air filter after this lot was done WOW what an improvement in performance.

Just had my cat removed and new exhaust fitted. I was assured by the garage that it would not be an MOT issue. I got a bit worried after reading this issue but thanks Stig you have put my mind at rest. Next off is the EGR.

You could always take it off and run a rod down through it busting out all the catalist, then put the empty shell back on.
