Have just purchased a discovery 2 and have an oil leak need to remove sump guard to check but am having trouble with the crossmember ie the bolts connecting it to the chassis. Would grateful for any advice.

Welcome to the club, they are notorious for self welding themselves to the chassis.

When I went to remove mine I found that someone previously had had trouble removing them and had ended up welding the cross member back in place.

Cheers

Before you get over involved with removing the sump guard, check that the oil leak isn't from the back end of cam cover gasket. It's notorious for being less than easy to fit properly and allowing a leak to develop which can eventually run down the back of the engine by which time, there's no knowing where the oil is coming from.

For the original bolts on the cross member hammer on a 3/8" socket, they're so soft it'll go on easy and a 10mm socket will probably just spin. Use a breaker bar, nip it up and then back it off, they'll either come undone or shear off. If they do shear get an 8MM drift on the sheared end and hit it up hard. The captive nuts are only tacked on and will pop off very easily. Did all eight of mine in 30 mins, 6 undid and 2 sheared.
