Recovery Points

Hi,

I'm looking to do some off-roading / green-laning and have been told that recovery points are required as a minimum - just in case the hippo decides to just wallow!!!

Got a tow ball at the back, but what do I need for the front and where's the best place for it (apart from at the front - thought I'd get that one in 1st ).

i've recently sent me membership forms off to BADLRC with a view to green laning with them so this will be an issue for me also -please can anybody help?

jate rings are the easiest & cheapist & you can fit them front and rear,tow bar is good for rear but sometimes they dig in resulting in you getting stuck(if you dont plan on towing trailers with it mount it high as possible),steering guards with built in recovery points are good for the front as your protecting your steering bars to

Thanks for taking the trouble to reply - i was under the impression that jate rings worked with the set up on defenders and discos but not freelanders but i could be wrong - my freelander (2001 three door) has an eye at the front but i suspect it is for lashing down rather than towing? looks like i need an undertray with towing points 0 any recomendations? cheers Bill

sorry i didnt realise it was a freelander,im not familier with them at all,jate rings attach to the chassis rails and i dont think freelanders have them as they independant suspension, if you have a look on the paddocks website they do freelander off road parts,your freelander as standard should have a recovery/towing point front and rear,if you look in your user manuel it should point these out and they should be enough to meet club rules

The freelander has 2 hooks at the front of the vehicle. One is directly in the middle (recovery?) And the other is on the left hand side IIRC. (Tie down hook?)

As for the rear, I'd use my towbar for that. My towbar attachment has 2 loops either side of it. I'm not quite sure what they're meant for, but they look strong.

Looking at the Mantec sump guard the front centre loop seems to have been left exposed for recovery.

Rear tow hook does seem best for recovering Discos

Owners handbook of course - the eyes - one on the front bumper, nearside and one in the rear bumper, offside are towing eyes for the recovery of the vehicle. the lashing eyes one in the center at the front as per andys photo and two at the rear are lashing eyes only and carry a warning that if they are used for recovery/towing then serious damage to the subframes could occur - Thanks everyone.

The front ones good at recovering classic range rovers.

Sorry to re-awaken such an old thread,

But I have been looking into some Greenlaning,
and the local boys also mentioned room to fit a shackle

Now I understand that the tow ball/bar on the rear is enough, and best
as it is central but I didn't see any info with regards to the front,,

will it be a case of attaching a large carabiner to the existing tow eye,
to allow the shackle to fit??
would this be strong enough to stay in one piece when being dragged from
some sticky mud??

Yeah a shackle on the front towing eye should be enough. Hard to get a shackle to stay on a towing ball though, do you have interchangable attachments like on a receiver hitch or have you just got a fixed tow bar?

I'll get back to you soon with the drawing of the spot lamp bracket, been surprisingly busy while i've been off

I know they are not the strongest of the tow balls,
but I am pretty sure this will be man enough..??

Any One have a couple of Large Heavy duty Shackles
that they don't use any more??

Never use krabs. They are in no way or form rated for this kind of thing. Any average sized shackle (3-5t) will fit through either recovery eye. The towball shouldn't really be used, however could be used as a secondary snap point. Im potentially looking at removing the towball from its two bolts and replacing it with an eye plate for safe attachment. Funnily enough a 3.5t shackle will fit around a towball but not over, so it cant ping off, but isnt particularly recommended. Where did you get your ball/pin attachment, as I might like one for mine. A good source for recovery kit is Damar Webbing

Also just to add, just spotted designs similar to yours IndiTD4 and they are only rated to 1.5t, just something to think about.

19mm pin one will do, I wouldn't use one on the back the less metal to fly about the better

Is your towbar 2 bolt or 4?

2 Bolt on mine.

Mine was from one of the guys on e bay..

They are all just under £30

Yes 2 bolt and your correct 1.5 tonne..
the question in how strong is the two bolts as they will potentially give up first??
