Hi after three years of fairly easy motoring, coming up from shaftsbury my lse lost power on gas so switched to liquid gold took off like a good un
about a mile later she boiled coasted off the road asap sat (swearing)quietly for a few moments ,130 miles from home eventualy we remembered we may have recovery ( we did ) got her home . Next day we set about tracing the
fault two days later tears . split liner no 1 cyl now reveiwing options
suggestion welcombe repair/scrap ?
be gentle with me and the bank;)

After considering the options, I was lucky eniugh to be able to go the new top hat liner route when mine dropped a liner. In all it cost me £5.5k - new engine £3.6K plus removal/refitting etc. Not a cheap fix, but a very good one!

I hope i've now got a very good P38 - in two years it's had all new suspension, cooling system, brakes, and now engine. I hope to only have to do "normal" servicing for the next few years!

Whichever route you take, good luck. They're fabulous when they're working.

Hi thanks for that just been put on three day week .options are limited to replace engine
[s. h] or replace with 300tdi and auto box .or if i was very clever i do have a mig 2.5 bmw
but goodness knows what would be involved in that ! or am i :5bbeatdeadhorse5:

firstly youve got to look at the big picture
how much does the car owe you? how much is it worth? (if running well) and how much will a new engine cost? will you end up spending more to repair than it would to replace? and is it a matter of better the devil you know?
you could buy a "new" car and have more problems than you have now
you can get second hand engines on ebay for under a grand but ask yourself first "why did they brake the car if it had a good engine?"
whatever you do i wish you good luck

Spot on, and too right! exactly what I was going to post.
Ultimately if you're doing the work/labour yourself replacing the lump is gonna be A LOT cheap in money, assuming you can or want to invest the time.

well i have found a possiblety of another 4.2 will see the owner next weekend to discuss possabilitys .My wife and i have already removed 1 head to confirm fault with our engine .so any further work will be down to us doing it ourselves :hysterically_laughi

Fur trapper-
Not really. Replaced the water pump, thermo and some hoses and belts. Had to repair a broken weld on the exhaust where it attaches to the manifold. It did die last winter and hibernated for half the season because I don't have a garage and winters here are pretty stout. Turned out my coil was weak, but not dead. Replaced it and the condenser and was on the road again. I've had the car for a year and have put nearly 30,000 miles on it.

No LPG conversion I would guess:) Oh and it's a 3.5V8 classic, the problems started with the 3.9/4.0 bored out version. You can tell it's an old motor because he mentions coil & condensor, the P38 has electronic ignition.
