i'm (hopefully) getting the 200 tdi into my series 3 over the long weekend. Problem is the gearbox i have in at the moment isn't the best and i'm guessing more power isn't going to help it get any better. it'll do for the time being though.

question is where can i get a decent re-con box at a fairy price (ball park figure a few hundred), i'm hesitant about getting a fifty quid ebay job and risking it. i've heard the series 3 military landys and lightweights etc had a stronger version of the series box?

are series 2 boxs and stronger or is it myth? would i have to change clutch stuff round?

cheers in advance

i've no doubt that the amount of work they carry out is worth that but for my box it would be £25 more than i paid for the landy.

Mid-60s Series 2 box is the strongest of Series box (I forget the suffix letter).

There are re-conditioning kit avaliable. The one that springs to mind is from LEGS About Legs

think you'll find that LEGS are no longer trading, heard the chap who owns it is giving up and moving to somewhere sunny

ashcrofts might be buying some tooling off him

might be worth attempting a rebuild then. where would i get the set of teethed spanners(???) i need to strip it down?

look you dont need any of those so called special tools. the series g/box is an easy rebuild. if your a transmission virgin just take some photos as you go, take your time, be clean and you will have a lot of fun.parts are cheap and plentiful and the satisfaction at the end is better than se*( no ignore that it isnt)

i agree there , have a go yourself , bit easier with engine already out, dosent take long to strip down, depends where your problem/wear is, if its just in the gearbox itself no need to strip transfer box or the front output box, although i would replace the seals while youre on, lot cheaper than ashcrofts and fun
