Recommendations for Road tyres

For the past year I've had general road tyres on my Disco (Coopers), tread has worn in no time at all (great grip, crap wear) but have recently fitted General Grabber AT2's .... what a difference!

We don't go off road much (muddy fields/mild green lane's at most) but the road handling is so much better, you can actually feel the grip through the steering. (I'll probably cop it for this comment)

But the AT2's are well worth a look at though. :)

Mine had Hankook 235/70R16 road tyres on it when I bought it. I did 10k miles on those before swapping to Grabber AT2s.

I can't comment on other types but I had no compliants about the Hankooks. Wear rate was fine, grip was fine, only swapped them because I wanted to play.

Put BFG ATs on my pickup about a month ago. Had General Grabber ATs on there before. Handling transformed, better grip and improved ride as well.

I was convinced by a friend of mine who took 70k miles to wear out a set.

I've got GOODYEAR WRANGLER HP 255/55R18 109H on mine - just replaced two of them and they seem fine. I mostly drive on tarmac with the occasional foray onto mud or dirt when towing a trailer. Handling is good, too early to say about wear yet although the grip on grass and dirt seems OK for road biased tyres.

I've got Wranglers too. I think they're the standard tyre on discos. They do change though - I bought a set about 18 months ago and they had a new tread pattern (three main channels instead of 4) and as they wear down the tread pattern changes - don't like. Recent pair I bought came with the old pattern. They're good on road (nice and quiet) and mud. Not much grip in snow though. I'm thinking about Kumhos next time - my supplier recommends them, they've had good reviews and they're cheaper!

Pirelli Scorpions.

Decent wear rates without overall grip being compromised.
Pretty stiff sidewalls, excellent progessive breakaway charactoristics.
Excellent wet, damp or dry grip.
Great straightline and lateral grip.
They still retain decent levels of grip, even when nearing the wear blocks, (unlike anything I have experianced from Michelin or Goodyear).
Decent return on fuel economy.
And I'm guessing that they have a fairly high silca content as they aren't too bad in cold or icy conditions. Compacted snow soon fills the tread blocks though.
