Rear work light,without making holes ???

I have an urge to have a high level rear "work" lamp on one or more of the disco 300s.However,given the standing problems with leakage on the sheds I am not over enamoured with the idea of drilling MORE holes to let the wet stuff in.

Dont want to go with a bolt on roofrack type crossbar for various reasons.None of my vehicles have stock roof bars fitted.I had considered bending a bit of plate to the profile of a roofrack clamp and mounting a lamp to that,then running the cable out of tailgate hole through the rubber surround.Unless there are already viable holes sitting there waiting for me.....

Anyone done this?Without drilling holes?If so,how?Enquiring minds and all that.....:rolleyes::rolleyes:
 
How about getting a thick steel plate and attaching it to spare wheel carrier somehow?

I saw a cb antenna mount that was pretty impressive attached in the same way. If its made right it shouldnt get in the way and should be solid
 
Now that IS a good idea! Never seen that done but no reason why it shouldnt.Theres a cable run into the door from the body already....hmmmm....will have a look at that.Nice one mate !

Would ideally like the lamp higher for work but that would make a nice flood and reversing light.Any more for anymore?
 
mine's got one on.. its attached to the gutter at the side of the read door... wiring goes down back of rear door seal and through the hole that the rear door electrics use..

looks like an arial gutter mount has been modified for the lamp..
 
I have just done this, and only drilled 1 6mm hole, under the rear number plate, by mounting the light on the top rung of the rear ladder, running the cable in shrink tube down the back of the ladder and in under the number plate so not visible, and totally siliconed in now.

I ran two lives to this, one an ignition switched live from a switch in the dash, and one to the rear door, so I can use it either as a reversing light from the drivers seat when driving, and as a rear work light from the rear door, or hitching up trailers/deer in the dark.

BTw, if it helps, I spliced the purple permanent live to a small 4 way fuse box, in the rear door, and ran in a separate internal boot light, and some 12v sockets for use with cooler/chargers etc.

I trapped a flat plate between the roof and side panel above the oval window on an original bolt for the lamp mount and sneaked the wire in a gap behind the door seal.

I found it easy to buy some cheap "Micro-Fog" lights, & mount them on the top of the rear door. I simply hot-melt glue'd the wires inside the top of the door (Away from the rubber seal), Down the hinge-side, & in to the bundle of cables that go between door/body.

they are small enough to remain fairly-well protected from branch's when out laneing.
Yes, you drill into the door, but not anywhere that would allow water into the vehicle.

I think I might try a couple of cheapy stick on LED lights from ebay and do like mburton on my "posh" disco but for my money the CB ariel mount style has got to be it,great pics by PaulMc convinced me ! I will either buy a hella worklamp as shown or use one of a pair of hella spots that I always seem to get for free when I buy a bullbar.

I was going to make up a mount like an old fashioned roofrack clamp to go on the gutter...cos I amp cheap....but if there are CB ones out there,I shall look at one,maybe even buy it if its TOO much bother to make! Now.....where do I look for a CB mount and how much should I be paying ?

PS...PaulMc...so thats what a td5s bumper looks like without the cover...and to think I was looking for one to escape the misery of end-cap trims ! :rolleyes::D:D

by the way....anyone looking for a series bullbar?In cornwall?Exchange for disco 1 bits?
 
I fitted mine using the CD mount, but waht I did find is the clamp part of it is not up to much, so I removed this part and then drilled 2 holes into the base and also into the gutter rail, and bolted it in place, so now its nice and solid ;)

I haven't finished my installation yet :eek: - but I have fitted the gutter clamps.

I had to cut away the drip rail finisher to get the clamps to fit over the gutter.

I also put a piece of 15 x 2mm Aluminium strip (from B&Q) in the gutter to tighten the clamping screws down on to.


LH side (the drip rail finisher was already cracked) -

I'll be taking the cables through the panel gap at the top corner of the rear pillar (underneath the corner of the drip rail finisher) down behind the lights and in through the grommet used for the rear lights.

Duh!! I totally missed that one! I could make a cushty mag-mount with some ring magnets out of scrap microwaves ! Been collecting them for welding earths anyway......
