Hey. After varouus problems with the rear not lifting properly it's finally given up. Got an EAS fault up. Got 2 questions. Is it fairly straight forward to change the rear airbags myself? And secondly after I change them will the fault clear or do I have to take it to a garage to do it? It's a 96 p38 2.5 dse. Thanks!

The rear air bags are fairly straightforward to change, but do a search on here for various tips.

The main thing to note is that the existing bags may be stuck in there fairly solid. Mine needed a good bit of brute force and a prybar to shift them.

If I'd had the confidence to use the necessary force from the start, I reckon I'd have done the whole job in a couple of hours.

Can't comment on the fault - I just changed the bags and they were fine. Unless anyone advises differently, I would just change the bags and see how you get on from there.

Thanks! Think I'll have a go. Its my first one but everyone keeps telling me they are pretty straight forward to work on. Any help and advice is much appreciated!!!

Datasets guide is most excellent, and I produced my own some time ago.. as mentioned the hardest part is getting the old ones to let go..I also ended up using a pry bar forced between top of the bag and the chassis..
The fault depends whether it is a hard or soft fault, if its hard you will need to plug it in. if you've had this problem for a while, consider a pump rebuild at the same time..

Bit of a seperate question here but still to do with EAS. I have had a problem with rear end dipping down at passengers side on and off depending where parked .So after some reading of the owners manual I have come across a button on the dash that prevents it dropping to access mode. I clicked it on today and the car does not drop every time I get out which I find much better and no waiting for the compressor to lift the car.Is it ok to leave it with this button on all the time?

Not sure that I have a leak ,I have just replaced the rear air bags. The compressor seems to be working fine and not on all the time.

If it drops to access height when parked you do have a leak. Self levelling when door is shut, should only take car back to standard height, after weight of passengers driver are removed. It just vents the air pressure that was required to take the load and maintain standard height with that load.

Yeah it self levels ,I hear the clicks for about 10 seconds then it sits pretty well .It is only sometimes it drops real low .I think i'm paranoid about the suspension if im honest.I plan to do the front air bags after xmas , then replace all the valve bock seals.Once this is all done I hope my paranoia will be sorted too.Cant be much left to do on the suspension after that is there?

Maybe shoulda replaced the lot with coil springs but my mechanic mate said best to stick with the air springs. And after reading on here many have changed to springs then went back to air springs. So that kinda made my mind up to stick with the air springs

Height sensors:rolleyes:

hi datatek where can i find this wonderful guide to changing air bags and how to skin graft my hands

Might I suggest that you PM DATATEK and spend a few beer tokens with the man. He can supply you with the necessary lead to connect your computer to the EAS system along with a disc that carries not only the EAS software so that you can read and clear your own EAS faults but also the airbag change guide AND a copy of RAVE (workshop manual).

Just a thought.
:D
