i'm just in the process of rebuilding my rear axle replacing all the bearings and braking parts and I'm unsure whether i need to replace the rear stubs because of the wear or not.

Below is some photos of them, there is some marking on the main shafts from the bearings but they don't appear to be scored or worn down at all. But there is some pitting on the surface the oil seal sits on.

Question is do i need to replace them? They weren't leaking any oil so i guess the oil seal was properly sealed against the pitted area. I would replace them anyway as a matter of course but i really can't afford an extra £50 at the moment so will i get away with just replacing the gasket, mud shield, seal and bolts on the stubs?

Many Thanks..

seal surfaces are worn ,but since hubs are filled with grease it shouldnt be such an issue , polish them up as much as you can with a wire wheel or similar

great thanks james, do you think the new bearings will be ok if the main shaft is a little worn down? I tried sliding the old bearings over and checking for any play but wouldn't detect any difference between the middle of the stub and the areas the bearings sit

I'd use some fine 120grit emery and clean/polish them up by hand. That way you won't take too much material off them and cause any more damage. Which can happen if you use power tool to clean them.

Our old Series ones were worse than that and they soldiered on for many years. As some of the pitting was quite deep on the area the inner lip of the seal bears on, I gave it a smear of silicone sealant with my finger to fill the holes, and let it dry before reassembly. Probably not best engineering practice but it kept us going with no leaks.
