Rear Shocks.

Are they a simple diy job for an amateur or do i need to take it to a garage.
Basically my bushes are pretty much perished, but after an inspection today the shocks look pretty fooked as well.

I look at it as putting it on stands and undoing the bolts and a straight swap, is it that easy.

piece of **** as long as the top mount doesn't snap off while your doing it.

The hardest part of the job I found was undoing the rusted nut's on the lower shock mount (my 94' Disco still had original shock's on it when I bought it last year

), but if your changing the shocks & bushes it's a lot quicker to grind them off, which I realised after scraped knuckles and loadsa nice words

Aye or if you don't wanna grind em then just burn the locking rubber out of the nuts, makes it much easier.

Careful undoing the top mounts, bad habit of snapping.

before even picking up a spanner spend a day giving all the nuts and bolts you intend to undo a regular dose of WD40 or something to try and loosen the rust and grot that will stop the nut undoing easily. a day spent doing this saves ALOT of hassle when it comes to actually undoing anything. when i did my lift i spent a day spraying everything with WD40 every hour and pretty much every nut and bolt came out easily and nothing snapped (not even my front turret rings!!)

Spent at least every day and most of yesterday spraying all bolts in readiness for today.
Attempted to do job in my dinner hour, started at 12 midday, had everything under control then sods law as i was informed the top mount snapped.
After a lot of ****s i took the works van to my local bearmach to purchase a new one (27 quid with bolts)
Got back to work and finished at 2pm, ****ed if i attempting to do jobs like that in work again.

That's progress for you, my 3.5 RR had only washers and a split pin fixing for the top mount so it only takes as long as it takes to remove the rusty pin.

In future I would'nt pencil in any job to do in you're lunch hour.... even simple jobs have a habit of turning to **** if you're on a time limit.

I'll second that, out of all the jobs I've done on the Disco I'd reckon 90% of them have taken longer than expected due to something else being knackered, rusted on or breaking:doh:, so I tend to make sure there are no plans for the car for at least that whole day.

Hi there. I've tried tonight to do the same job of replacing the rear shocks. All went well (yes WD40 is a must) until I tried to undo the lower bolts of the old shock. The shock keeps spinning!!! How do you get around this? Tried loads of funny ideas but no success. Thanks for any advice.

monkey wrench round the shock tube

its a pain in the ass but thats how i did mine. if you aint re-using the shock then you can use mole grips if you got a set big enuff but usually stilsons work perfectly

I had the same problem with the front shocks, I simply drilled a hole into the shock and stuck a longish bolt into the hole so that when the shock spun the protruding bolt would eventually stop at something solid thus allowing me to get the nut's off.

today i changed all four shocks on my discovery for monroe 4x4 adventure gas shocks. i used an oil filter remover with the webbed strap to remove the front shocks, it held the shocks firmly and just a bit of heat to the lower nut it came off a treat !
