rear petrol tank

my 110 89 pick up has a rear tank and the sender is faulty not wanting to remove the sender yet, but just wondering if there is any difference in a petrol tank to a diesel tank and also the senders for petrol and diesel????
The reason for asking is that it did have a 3.5 ltr petrol engine and is now fitted with a 300 TDi also diesel is leaking slightly from fuel cap when full, is this because the cap is for petrol???

I'm fairly certain they are the same , think the fuel return pipe is blanked off on the petrol with a removable fitting.
 
so i should buy a petrol sender???
i have 3 wires going into the sender i take it this may have low warning light or is this standard for non and with warning light.
 
return goes to top center of tank
so whats the pipe thats sticking out of the sender on deisels but not on petrol am i missing something here as the one thats fitted at the moment has no tube going into it only 3 wires as i think this is the original tank when the v8 was fitted.

a diesel sender has a pipe connector for feed to lift pump on the inside its a stack pipe that draws from the bottom of the tank
 
i see but my lift pump is connected to a a glass bottom thing attached to bulkhead under the bonnet, so if i bought desiel sender would i have to bypass this and fit direct to lift pump or just buy a sender without a stack pipe????
i think ill have another look and take pictures on what ive got that might help to explain things.
at the moment im making a list of things that need attention and see if i can buy at the LR peterbourgh show next weekend, my list is getting bigger by the day.......doh

? why theres only one feed from tank and with a 300 tdi its from sender unit to the front ie lift pump

so Ive attached photos the lift pump is feed from the bottle looking thing, also there is a pipe that goes to carb and a hose from tank. as you can see there is a pipe that has been bent over and cable tied so to prevent anthing coming out i assume. if any one can enlighten me on any of this please, as it all started to find out about my fuel sender.

normally theres a direct feed from tank to lift pump from there to filter from there to front of injection pump, and if using red a glass bottom filter isnt recommended, that filter head is for a 2.5 na or td so has a return from injector rail tdi return goes to rear of pump then straight back to the tank,youd be better with the correct tdi filter head and pipe work
