When going over potholes, drain covers etc. There is a distinct knocking from what sounds like the rear near side wheel arch area. Trouble is I can’t find anything ‘loose’ which might be causing the problem.
The exhaust system seem secure with all rubber mounts intact and the rear shock mounts appear solid. I’ve even emptied the spare wheel space in case there was something jumping around in there.
I would really appreciate some help in how to pin it down. What to look for, what to dismantle, specific checks; that sort of thing.
It would be easy to ignore as handling is fine and all is quiet on smooth road.

I have a metallic knock from front n/s corner checked shock and spring .bottom arm and ball joints
.and still cant find it .have you tried the spring to see if a part of the coil has snapped.
.i know from passed experience it takes some finding .hope you have more luck than me finding it.

I may have found the problem. There's a hint of oil around the shock gaiter. Hard to see, but rubbed it with my fingers and does feel oily. The offside shock appears dry. Looks like I'll need to replace the pair.

Anyone got any recommendations regards a make with good value for money? I don't play off-road but do a helluva lot of motorway miles.

OE would be the way to go. You could well find a label stuck to the shock body. This will normally have the name Delphi and give you the LR part number. You can then get the correct Delphi replacement based on the part number.
