I've done some searching on this and apart from the general feeling that it's a bit of a job,
is this one that can be done at home (by 2 fairly competent swearers) and does the engine need pulling to do it?

Either the engine or the gearbox has to come out. Your choice but personally I'd pull the engine as its easier to get to especially if you dont have the use of a vehicle lift. Its a heavy bugger but so are most diesel engines.
Once the engine and gearbox are apart its basic spannering to take the flywheel off and change the oil seal.
I'd also change the clutch plate and the release bearing while I was in there along with the input shaft spigot bush in the end of the crankshaft.
Do it right and you should not have to go back in there for many years to come.
