So, since I plan to replace hard roof with canvas I need a half door at the rear.

I think a half door that hinges the same way as the full door will make rear access easier. The drop down is presumably more for pickup style?

So anyone done this and has a recommendation for which door to buy. I see Craddocks do one but it's got lock, hinges etc. and presumably I don't need most of that if I use the hardware off my full door? I see a cheaper bare door on ebay that looks pretty well designed, although the welding looks a bit heavy. OK on a series I guess!

I was planning a big resto and have just bought a big clarkes temporary garage to make a start but the weather is nice so I'm thinking I may just paint it, take the roof off and use it for the summer, then start resto in Autumn.

I have to take a view on whether to blag an MOT exemption first...due to no functioning regional Gov't at the time, the new 40 year rule wasn't introduced here in N.Ireland and still hasn't been. In process apparently. I've heard though that some post offices will take the MOT exemption form and V5 and tax the vehicle so maybe that's enough...or might I not be insured...?

I'd just patiently wait for one to pop up on eBay - I got one for £30 that was in excellent condition and in the same colour.

Edit: What ^^ said, beat me too it while I was finding pics!

You can also just side hinge the standard drop down tailgate with not a lot of effort, and then it will look correct. By doing this you also then do not need to worry about the lower canvas fitting hooks that you will not have on a standard rear door that has been cut down. Locks etc are not a problem as you use the existing anti-loose catch that secures the tailgate normally all you would need to go is work out the hinge position and mount to the tailgate.

OK, thanks will do.
Seems the Defender tailgate will also fit? Seems to be more of them available.
