Rear Door hinges

I'm looking at putting my spare wheel on the rear door of my S3 109, are the original hinges on them up to the job or does anyone use or know if stronger ones are available, I've read quite a few articles with mixed advice.

You can fit an extra hinge in the centre, same as the bottom one.

Even with an extra hinge, I don't think the frame of the door is strong enough in the long term. The best solution is a swing away carrier which cost over £400 if memory serves me correctly.

I took mine off the door and moved it to the bonnet as the door was struggling. A number of people have modified swing away carriers they got cheap off e-bay to fit. Some look very neat.

If you do much towing do not bother with wheel on rear door of series, the position is lower than a Defender and gets in the way for hitching.

That's the other reason, i have the NATO hitch and the wheel covered it.
