Rear discs. advice needed.

as you know im replacing all the brakes on my 300tdi. Fronts went ok but the rear discs look different to what i have. the part no is correct for my model but on mine, looking at itfrom the rear, there is a raised flange around the rear oil seal and i cant see how to remove the disc from the hub. the new disc has just a large hole in the middle. placing one on top of the other, the disc to hub bolt holes are identical. What am i missing, how do i separate the disc from the hub? The fronts came apart with a clump from a hammer.
 
If mine were anything to go by, the discs can be a very tight fit on the hub, and with a bit of rust to stick them on as well, can be very difficult to get off indeed. If you support the centre of the hub on something like a block of wood and hammer the disc downwards it will come off, but it needs something about the weight of a club hammer to shift it. Oh, and check you haven't left a bolt in by accident!

Hit the disc rather than the hub because that's the bit you're going to throw away. If you hammer the inner bit of the hub (tempting) it's really easy to 'bruise' the bit that the seal goes in, which you want to avoid, obviously.

I cant see a visible joint on the inner oil seal side of hub between it and the disc. If i put new disc on old, the hole in the new disc is away from the part of the old hub where oil seal sits. how would you separate the old hub from disc?

never hit hub they are soft and will easily damage i just lie disc down hub up on floor lift one edge of hub and whack down on disc with a lump hammer then rotate 180 and hit the other side now raised
 
yes just keep hitting disc it will come off or break off sooner or later, place one foot to support the part of disc thats resting on the floor whilst you hold the hub up to whack raised side ,just dont hit hub
 
Got the discs off yet? It's just an interference fit aided and abetted by rust, so they will separate eventually. I put mine upside down (compared to your photo) with that ridge around the seal supported by a spare bit of wood and worked my way round the disc with a hammer. Then I realised it wasn't working and got a heavier hammer. Putting the new ones on I cleaned up the bit of the hub that they go on and applied some grease so they might actually come off next time.

You might as well wait 'til you can compare the old and new discs directly before swapping the new ones at the shop. Sometimes parts store people have a rather creative understanding of the part numbers catalogue in my experience. The critical thing is whether the physical parts actually match.

Got them apart as james said by holding hub while hitting disc. I used the part no on there online list but it didnt take into account the different axles, mines a salisbury. All sorted now, new ones ordered. Also found out that taping the finger of a rubber glove around the end of the brake pipe to stop the fluid leaking wont last all night. Walked into the garage this morning and slipped arse over tit on a pool of fluid. Was going the clamp the flexi but mine seems much to hard for it to compress so didnt bother.:doh:
