Rear Diff. replacement

Hey Fella's,

I am going to be replacing the rear diff unit on my Discovery 1 V8. I have a couple of questions if you wouldn't mind indulging me:

1) I want to replace the nuts that hold the diff assembly onto the axel but I cannot find replacements. Are there 'offical' replacments or just generic nuts? I was thinking of maybe some nyloc ones.

2) Due to the searching for the above, I have seen several places selling a gasket however, the when I removed the knackered one there was no gasket there. Is this necessary?

If the machined faces are ok then no need for a gasket but you could smear the faces with sealant, the nuts are just standard 3/8 UNF nyloc.

The land rover part number was NY606041L

May sound stupid but how you know if its on its way out as my rear diff has a clunk to it as if its missing a bit off a tooth when spinning 1 wheel whilst that sides in air

Those nuts are cheap from britpart etc iirc, same as propshaft nuts by the way

Technically it should have a gasket because there is a case to assume that the gasket thickness will offset the half shafts if it is not fitted BUT many run without a gasket.

If you ask me, for the price, fit a gasket. They're sturdy enough to use multiple times as it happens.

yeah that is a bit broke

as for the other stuff prop nuts as has been said and i have never bothered with a gasket just cleaned the faces and used a smear of silicon between two cleaned faces, out of interest i have had mine in and out swapped and farted about with about 10-12 times in the last few years and never used a gasket.
