Rear diff oil seal

Guys,

1991 Defender 110 (Ex MOD)

I have a small oil leak from where the rear propshaft connects to the rear diff.
My Haynes manual covers the removal of the rear propshaft but not the removal of the flange from the diff or the replacement of the oil seal.

Has anybody replaced this seal recently?

Are any special tools required?

The seal is pressed in and is a tight fit. To remove, cut through with a hacksaw blade in a couple of places being carefull not to cut into diff case, prize out with a screwdriver. Wipe edge of diff case clean and press new seal in using a suitable size socket and mallet until flush with case.job done!!!!

you dont need to cut it (danger of swarf) just a big screwdriver will do it.

Have you a Sals or Rover rear axle?

On a Rover axle, remove prop then you remove the castelated (sp?) nut and flange then pry the old seal out and slot the new one in. Fairly easy.

Be careful not to damage the edge where the seal joins the case if using a screwdriver to bash it out or it will leak.

but does the flange withdraw by hand without a puller once the castellated nut is removed?
