Welll, after changing the mount on the rear diff, the f***ing clunking noise is still there on full lock...

Want to check there is oil in the diff, as I've a feeling there is none!

However, can't get the friggin plug out as it's a funny square allen-key type hole.

What size square key do I need to use to get this little bugger out? Is it just a 3/8" drive? (It's smaller than a half inch socket drive).

Am pretty concerned that the diff is knackered, but will attempt an overhaul rather than replacing it. Has anyone done this?

I cant help on drive size - but yu can buy tools to fit - most autofactors.

this mite help tho.

The rear diff has THREE mounts, not one.

Cheers

Yes, I know... I had all three off and replaced the most knackered one, the front one, which wasn't actually that knackered!

Thinking of going 2 wheel drive for the summer, to save the VCU and rear diffs, plus some fuel! Won't be going off road over anything that a 2 WD won't get over for agood few months...

twas a weird size i found a fit but be blowd if i know wot size, tip. . . shotgun spray wiv penatration un give it at least 24h ta soak,un make sure your near as dam it on level when replacin oil. . .:) :) :)

(Showing my ignorance about all things black, runny and smelling of cat wee...)

Would excess oil vent through the breather pipe, or would it just block the breather?

Will too much oil be a problem?

Can't see how, but these freelander's are delicate flowers!
yes. . .be sure to put in correct amount, so drain orft after a long run bout 4 miles, i never bother wif level if i can get correct amount in, unless jist toppin up. . . .:)

Got the bugger off... all it took was a 3/8" drive ratchet... came off pretty easy with no need for eze-it or anything.

Took approx 250ml to top up... so I'm off for a drive shortly to spread it round, then try the old full lock.

The oil already in there was pretty mucky, but I couldn't feel any metallic particles so fiongers crossed that those few extra mls will sort out the noise.

My mate has a Toyota Surf, which he said he had the same problem on and all it took was the diff oil topping up. If the diff's buggered, the sodding thing is going to be traded in!

Righty... just been for a mile long drive to spread the oil over the diff and it seems fine... woohoo!

However, while I was under there, I put white lines across the VCU to check that was OK... they haven't moved! :(

How far do you usually have to drive to get them to seperate?

  :p

I wunt of thought far ! just floor it and get the TC to kick in should do it .

Well... I don't think the VCU is knackered... lines moved a bit after a longer run.

However, the noise from the rear is still there on full lock!

Am considering removing the VCU and drive shafts to save wear and tear, but wonder if I can also remove the rear diff and get it overhauled at my leisure... realise that this won't be all that easy, but would like to get it sorted (if that's the problem) before it's totally knackered???

I think I'm getting "Freelander Paranoia"... every clunk and rattle I think is going to cost me £2k or more!
