I am carrying my 90 to a welder today to get a quote on installing a new crossmember.

I read that I have to be careful of a wiring loom that is running in/on/through the crossmember.

Where exactly are these wires ?

Any other tips for a welder that has never seen a Defender much less cut off and re-installed a crossmember?

Thanks.

The loom runs inside the offside chassis rail from front to back, exiting just in front of the rear cross member. It then goes up to the rear of the offside lights, and crosses on top (if I remember correctly) of the cross member to go up to the rear of the nearside lights.
To be honest, once he gets under there and has a look around, it'll be obvious what is what - apart from the loom coming out of the chassis, there's no nasty surprises.

Cheers instantsquid.

Usually you cut the loom, and push it up inside the chassis with a bit of old brake pipe or simillar so you can pull it through once the new cross member is on(if it has extension) and rejoin them with a solder joint and heat shrink. I have seen loads that have been crimped they always end up causing problems. When i did mine(300TDI) i unclipped the loom from the bulkhead and pulled it through then ran it along the top of the chassis leg, But i had quiet a few probs with the loom and had to replace bits where i had rubbed through.

Im so happy!!!

Went for a ride last night with the wife out west.
We stopped to a store and the wife goes in.
A Discovery pulls up next to me in the patking lot, its a TDI!!!!! The only diesel Discovery that I have ever seen in the Bahamas AND its right hand drive.

The driver gets out and introduces himself as he admires my D90.

He is a Land Rover Specialist!!!!!!!!! and he has been in Nassau for 8 years.
Now I know who has been keeping all the Disco v8's and Rangies running.

Apparantly he goes to 3 other islands in the carribean servicing land Rovers but he actually livesin Nassau.

Lucky ME.

He has already agreed to replace my rear crossmember and Im going to let him give her a propper service before my next holiday/road trip.

I feel much better knowing that there is someone on the island that has experience with my truck.

: )
