Rear crankshaft oil seal

Hi, can anyone please tell me if you have experienced a leaking rear crank oil seal that has stopped leaking by itself?
Yes it does still have oil in it before the jokes about it all running out start.
The previous owner put too much oil in it which I presumed caused the leak, but now it seems to have stopped. I wondered if I had been lucky enough for it to somehow slide back into place? Or is this even possible? It’s a 2.25 petrol. Thanks

Its very unlikley it fixed itself. The leak was probably caused by too much oil and now some of it has leaked out, the seal is happy or a bit of sludge has blocked it. Whatever the reason enjoy the moment cos oil prefers the outside of landy engines and it wont be lkng before it makes another bid for freedom.

Haha thanks for the advice yes I had a series 2a a few years ago and I know what you mean.

Seal is probably knackered, but oil at normal level was being contained and worn seal could not cope with to high an oil level, add in the fact to high an oil level will also raise the crankcase pressure which of course will find all the weak spots.

If it is the split type rear seal, put off changing it as long as possible as they are a real pita, crap idea for a seal in the first place!

So not leaking = carry on blissfully unaware and enjoy life.

Pluss one, Split type seal a real Bleep bleep, bleep item.

Three or five bearing crank ? Three bearing with split seal is a challenge, I have had 10,000 miles/8 months from one without leaks others didn't make it out of the garage.

If I was you I'd leave it as long as possible, the seal is probably ****ed. Is yours a 3 or 5 bearing? Sometimes you can get away with leaving it which is recommended. Replacing the seal is an expensive job and doesn't always even stop the leak lol. Also have you got the wading plug in? That could be blocking the oil from escaping which could mislead you?

Leave it alone if it has stopped leaking and even if it restarts leaking still leave it alone until you need to split the engine/gearbox for another job. Mine (5mb diesel) has been leaking for the 10 years I have had the vehicle. Also for the 10 years I have had the vehicle I have been saying it will need a clutch shortly and I will do it then. So far the clutch has not failed so the crank seal has not been replaced!
