So I've removed gearbox to replace clutch (if you remember I posted about JUDDERING WHEN SETTING OFF) to see a large amout of black nasty oily sludge in bell housing of both gearbox and engine.

Thanks for advice that it was caused by rear main seal. So next task is to replace that...

So question is this

Do I remove the 2 retaining halves to get at the seal or do I take off the the bearing cap?

And its split at top spring at 90 Degrees...

Original Landrover issue workshop manual which I bought with my first three weeks wages in 1973 when I started work for the local British Leyland dealer.:)
 
Thanks again - just found one on t'interweb on its way now - I think "don't makeum like used too" is appropriate!!!
