Hi Guys

I have a 55 Plate TD4. It went in for an MOT on saturday and I asked them to have a look at the handbrake cos it was getting a bit stiff. Got car back, drove local on Saturday and everything fine. Went out sunday and on the way back noticed it was a bit sluggish but put it down to the 1/2 ton of horse manure that was in the trailer behind. When I got home the passenger drum was cooking! Took it back to garage this morning. When they got the drum off it looked as if the adjuster had gone too far. They moved it back and everything seemed o.k. Checked the other side everything fine. Took it on a 10 mile test run. No problems:). I then set off on a 40 mile journey. 2 miles before i got there i hit the brakes and at first pedal went to floor (about 70 on motorway). Pumped pedal and brakes restored but it pulled heavily to one side.
When i got off the motorway to have a look the drivers side was now cooking. Called RAC out and got a lift home! It now appears that something has happened to the other adjuster.

Has anybody got any ideas why it seems to over adjust (cos the garage haven't!).

They are going to have a look again tomorrow but I would like a heads up so i don't get bulls&*ted as it was fine before they fixed it:doh:

Thanks in advance

Tony

The self adjusters can't over adjust. At a guess I'd say someone adjusted the cables incorrectly??

I AGREE WITH CHASER [OOPS CAPS ON:)] cable has seized on either one side or stretched ,they have adjusted beyond its limitation [so that shoe's have moved in rest] or when suspension lifts it locks self adjusters. . . . .anyhows new cables ,adjust and reset self adjusters bang on pedal to set them . . . . .simples :)

Had the same problem on mine a couple of weeks ago both sides had got red hot.Stripped down both sides and cleaned everything greased where needed. Not had a problem since both cables are nice and free.
I think both sides had over adjusted by one click on the ratchet because if you sit with your foot hard on the brake and pull on the handbrake if its close to the next click on the adjuster it will adjust too much, then when you use the car and brake normally the heat will make things expand and bind even worse
My problem happened after the better half had the car and you know what women are like at yanking the handbrake on.:):)

That can't happen due to the amount of free movement of the shoe before it picks up the adjuster.......:)

It seems strange that i backed off each adjuster one click to get the drums to spin freely also both cables are very free and no where near fully adjusted.

Hi Guys

Thanks for the comments. They stripped it all down, cleaned greased etc. The adjusters were backed off one notch and its been fine since like Garfield's.

It's been fine since.
