Aha - from this snippet of info I deduce that you have in fact bought a Freelander and not any of the other (more) famous Land Rover products ;)

The rummble from the rear axle will in fact be due to a carelessly discarded heated curling tong flex getting wrapped around a rear disc. You should always dispose of waste hairdressing products responsibly ;)

Ahem, all banter aside - WELCOME! and seriously, it could be a rear wheel bearing on it's way out or perhaps a diff bearing (not familiar with Hippo drivetrain, sorry).

It's customary on LZ to post up an introduction and then post your questins in the appropriate section; in your case the Freelander section. (It's also customary to get and give arsey comments about each other's favourite Land Rovers! :D

Hope you get the advice from the knowledgeable Freelanderers

I owned a Freelander once and this is what happened. And when I say happened, I mean went wrong.
High pressure fuel pump
Low pressure fuel pump
Clutch cylinder
Rear window mech failed. (In sainsburys with a boot full of shopping)
Both front window mechanisms
Head gasket
Sun roof spontaneously shattered.

Needless to say, I binned it. And when I say binned it I actually mean sold it to some mug.

Such a shame really as it was a comfy and fun car to drive. But so drastically unreliable.

Have a disco 1 now which I plan to keep of top of maintenance wise and I just wish I'd bought one sooner.
