rear axle grease question

Just wondered if anyone knows what would be the issue with this.

I have grease (not oil) in the centre of my rear wheel, defender 90 v8. Wheel bearing seems fine, took the rear drum off and thought it was the brake cylinder but its grease not oil. The brake shoes were covered in grease and it seems to be coming from inside the axle.

Is there some kind of seal inside that's prone to leaking? If so does anyone know what its called so I can order a replacement part.

Could be the oil seal behind the hub bearing, possibly with fluid being forced through due to a blocked axle breather?

Sure JamesMartin will advise shortly -he's far better than I am with the mechanical stuff
 
how olds your truck as they havent used oil for wheel brgs for a long time ,hub seal for grease is ftc4785 ,check its not wrong way round as a lot are ,the hollow part of seal goes to hub ,and yes check breather ,oil from axle is supposed to be kept from hub by either a seal in stub axle sealing on shaft or 2 x seal in hub were outer seal near drive flange keeps oil from brgs ,you can fit ealier seal when oil did lubricate brgs rtc3511 as oil in brgs wont hurt and some revert to it
 
Cheers guys thats really helpful, Its the same landy as in my picture (1990 'g' reg). It was originally a 3.5 v8.

I will take it apart tomorrow and have a look, Its the only landy i have had apart from a series 2a so don't know a great deal.

Thanks bevhelee but its not the rear wheel cylinder, thats dry and the grease is coming from the centre and then going back onto the brake shoes. I thought to start with it would be a cylinder (easier fix).

I'm hoping my wife will let have a chance to look at it today, I'm supposed to be doing the gardening with her.....
 
Have you had the wheel bearings replaced recently?

Wheel bearings are packed with grease at the time of fitting, but many garages have a tendency to pack in too much, which then squeezes out when driving.

Grease on your drums/shoes isn't good.
