rear axle driving members , rangie or defender?

im replacing the driving members on the back of my 90.
the front ones went on ok but the back ones are different , they are shorter.
the axle has discs on there so im not sure if its off a rangie or not.

here is a pic of both driving members , the ones on there are the shorter ones (35 mil) as opposed to the new ones (50 mil).
the half shaft has 24 splines on the wheel end and ten on the diff end.
any ideas?

Defender axles, with discs on 'em, are the same driving members front and rear - if you've got discs on the back and the driving members are different - then it's probbly a rangie rear axle.

well adz , ive done some digging.
i found the 300tdi 90 drive member's part number , its FTC859.
a quick google came up with this,

Ashcroft Transmissions

i then googled the superseeded part number and found this

RUC105200: LRdirect.com : Land Rover Parts & Accessories for Defender, Series, Range Rover, P38, Discovery & Freelander

thats the part on there at the moment. the replacments i got were the older type up to and 200tdi.
so , im back to thinking defender axle again.

while ive got you here fella , you mentioned some part in the tranny box that can crerat play in the drive train , what was that called then? the rear drive members dont seem to bad , i put new front ones on and a new front prop and although it got most of the play out its still a bit loose.
im getting a clonk from the middle now and i recon its the tranny box.

Sorry mate - missed this first time around!

As far as I know the only bits of the transfer box you can replace without taking it off the car are the output shafts. With that said, this int something I've ever done, only read about so how viable (doesn't look like a huge job - you'll need new bearings and oil seals for them too) or even sensible it is to replace the output shafts without replacing the gear they mesh with I simply don't know.

Someone else on here might have a better idea if they've done it before - any takers?

cheers adz , im gonna have a look at the diff flange first and try driving it missing a prop , then the other prop just to be sure to be sure.
