Eh? My mother in law has had a mastectomy, what in the name of god is wrong
with naked breasts? She was in favour of it?

What about Marie Curie, my dad died in one of their hospices, superb work,
superb folk.

Well, whats your view Mark?

Yeah, sounds good.

Pretty poor attitude from the breast cancer folk. After all, aren't they the
ones parading up & down in their bras at the drop of a hat??

Well, if we take a moment to think about this, well intentioned as I'm
sure it was, there may possibly be some negative publicity as a result
of such an association. Any charity which has such a focus needs to
be very sensitive to the broader issues - I wouldn't really focus too
much anger at them politely declining your offer - they have to be
aware of all potential circumstances and you of all people should know
how the tabloid media can sometimes skew the facts.

A little sensitivity goes a very long way :)

I'd suggest a neutral charity, such as Air Ambulance or the
Alzheimer's Society.

No, not really. They're the people trying to support women during
what is probably the most frightening time of their life. Many of
those women will die as a consequence of their cancer.

I can see why the charity is being cautious and sensitive to the needs
of their client group.

Exactly, they do a great job, but having first hand experience of this &
other cancers. My Dad died of liver cancer, but he nor any of his family
would be offended by a feature with any of that kind of thing on it?

But, it's their loss Martyn.

My mum died from cancer in a hospice, so anything to do with either is

It's another sign of society's decline back to Victorian
closed-mindedness as we demonise anything that can be seen to be 'not
usual'. So, being an artistic photographer now precludes one from
contributing to the fight against cancer, as clearly Mark is 'a bit
strange' and therefore his money isn't good enough for them (or more
likely the individual who wrote to him and hasn't got the nouse to
find out exactly what it is that Mark does).

I like the quote "found an image of topless model", as if it was some
great discovery. If Mark just sent them £100 anonymously they'd
surely just bank it, but now they have 'found the images' (!!) his
money isn't good enough. Senseless.

I'm running the Great North Run this year in aid of BLISS. However, I
have pictures of babies and young children on one of my websites, so
perhaps my contribution won't be welcome.

We've banned fox hunting, handgun ownership and T-bone steaks; driving
a 4x4 is next, along with fishing and anything else that involves
actually 'doing something'. People can no longer accept that anyone
can be different to them, so we retreat to the lowest common
denominator of Daily Mail values and TV dinners. Rather than try to
understand, educate, accommodate or learn, we just ban the bloody
thing.

Just a thought to take to the polling station today....

I've got my dander up about this a little bit....

So I sent the following to our Mr Norford. I'll keep you posted....

<HERE GOES>

Dear Mr Norford

I write with regard to your recent communication with Mark Varley,
regarding his plans to create Land Rover Owners calendar in support of
your charity.

In recent weeks Mark has garnered substantial support from a loose
collective of like-minded Land Rover enthusiasts for the project.
Amongst the community he has had offers of loan vehicles, locations
for the photography, assistance with the printing and distribution and
interest in providing both personal and commercial sponsorship for the
calendar. The project has reached a 'critical mass' and seems likely
to raise a worthwhile sum whilst simultaneously raising the profile of
the nominated charity and its objectives.

In a rough poll, the Breast Cancer Campaign was a popular choice as
the nominated charity. It was therefore both disappointing and
somewhat offensive to Mark and to everyone who is supporting him to
receive a rather curt rejection of his offer of help.

This appears to be based solely on the fact that Mark's occupation is
as a professional photographer and that his body of work includes
artistic nudes. Those particular images are neither pornographic, nor
obscene, and would seem to be entirely in keeping with the aims of a
breast cancer charity who presumably consider the breast to be a human
organ, rather than something dirty, sexual or taboo. All this is, of
course, entirely irrelevant anyway as Mark's profession has no bearing
on his charitable offer.

I am sure that you receive many donations in the course of a normal
day, many of these will come from readers of the Sun, people connected
with the lingerie trade, the 'sex industry' and goodness knows what
else. The point I am making is that these people all contact you
because they have a genuine wish to help your charity, as does Mark
and the community of people who are supporting him. I would content
our money is as good as anyone else's.

I would, therefore, ask that you reconsider your response to the
benefit of your charity and the many women and their families who will
ultimately benefit from your work.

Yours sincerely

Tim Hobbs

Are they all in the same pickle as The Great North Air Ambulance
Service? That currently has two of its three helicopters grounded
because of a shortage of donations. So that AAS would get my vote but
I could be biased, living in an isolated and remote area of Cumbria
and the Cumbrian aircraft is one of the ones currently grounded...

As to the polite rejection from the Breast Cancer Campaign, that is
their choice, plenty of other charities out there. I don't have any
direct experience of cancer, all our families are free of it (so far,
taps head). Marie Curie hospices and/or the RNLI get my vote.

Erm, just for a moment consider how this charity calendar evolved...

Fine, I've no judgements to make in the way anyone wants to earn or
spend their money - s0 long as nobody gets hurt in the process,
HOWEVER, the calendar emerged from 'fna fna' comments about scantily
clad wimin on Marks 'mature' site. THIS IS SEXUAL.

The idea - as I understand it, is to make a calendar featuring Land
Rovers and, erm, scantily clad wimin. THIS IS SEXUAL - no matter what
spin anyone tries to put on it, it is, after all, a part of the point
of doing it, isn't it?

Now, take that and put it into perspective of a charity which exists
to help women who are not only in a state of panic and crisis, but
also - for those who survive the cancer and surgery, may have a very
poor self image. Whichever way you want to look at them, breasts are,
for a woman, SEXUAL and a part of their sexual identity.

I'm trying very hard to be independent here, but to be honest, I'm of
the feeling that there's a degree of insensitivity being demonstrated
which I feel somewhat uncomfortable with.

So, let's all shut the **** up and put our happy-heads back on, eh?

Mother" <"@ {m} @ came up with the following;:

As it happens .. I was never really comfortable with donating to a Breast
Cancer charity anyway.

My mum had a mastectomy and my sister is undergoing chemo atm, and they have
both said they'd rather anything I did went to RNLI, rather than for B C
Research ... They have 'personal reasons' for this.

Having said that, I'm happy to do a little for any charity, really. If
anypone wants a pic or three of a dirty 300Tdi 3 door Disco and a scantily
clad young lady draped over it, well, just tell me where and when .. ;)
