Hello All,

I am experiencing quite a loud rattling sound and I believe I may have narrowed the source of the problem down to the viscous fan. If I grab the fan (when the engine is off of course), there is a lot of movement/play in the vertical plane and I can also see the pulley moving too.

To make sure I'm on the right lines, does this entail dropping the radiator, removing the viscous fan and replacing the water pump? Forgive my naivety but if I recall, someone said that this was an early indication that the water pump was on its way out. Would this be wear to the pump that is allowing for excessive movement in the fan?

Many thanks in advance for your help/suggestions. I believe 'Service repair no - 26.25.19' and '26.50.01' are the relevant sections in RAVE?

Kind Regards,

Paul R. Smith.

Sounds bang on to me....

From those numbers I can deduce you have a post '99 V8....

(helps if you tell us what your Rangie is - assists us to assist you - for instance the Diesel VC Unit on the Fan is undone in the opposite direction to the V8's - not knowing your details I could have told you to undo it in the wrong direction!!)

Remember to undo the fan in the direction of rotation!!

Thanks Saint - my apologies, I have a '99 DSE! I must have been under the wrong section of RAVE. Are there bearings inside the waterpump that have gone, making the fan loose? Thanks for your help!

Anyway, many thanks for your help Saint.

The car I have is a '99 DSE - should have thought to mention that!

In my attempted post I was asking if there is a bearing inside the water pump that has worn, causing the loose fan?

If it is a Diesel unit...you need Service Numbers:

26.40.04 - to remove Rad
26.25.19 - to remove Fan
26.50.01 - to remove Pump

And just realised the service numbers are the same in RAVE regardless of Engine type - doh

Principle remains for the fan rotation though - undo in the direction of rotation!!

The bearing will be a non-removable part from the water pump housing - so the whole unit will need to be replaced...

if the pulley is rocking you must have a rock in the waterpump i never removed the rad doing a waterpump the viscus will prob have opposite thread prob 32 ml spanner . use a long spanner when the spanner is in place tap the spanner sharply with a hammer (sounds crude but....) to just use the spanner like normal will turn the pump.

i didnt mean rock as in a stone  i dont even know what a rock is none of those here in ireland .... would like if steve described hard water :D

Try jumping into water from 30 foot up with your legs apart. Then you'll find out how hard it is. :D:D:D Think he may mean water full of lime scale don't you think?
