If it's rattling on or off, then it's most likely the bearing in the clutch mechanism on the drive, easy fix. if only rattling when on, chuck it as all the ceramic is worn from the guides that rub on the swash plate.

Thanks ssmn, its rattling on and off so you say its an easy fix.... what do I do? appreciate your advice

firstly, I would be making sure it is the compressor, as that part generally last a lot longer than yours has, maybe some cowboy been at it with WD40 or something. You need to take the pully/clutch mechanism off the front of the compressor, but do not remove the compressor obviously. it will be a bit akward doing it on the car but unless you want to have it regassed tis the way to go. then take youself off to a bearing shop or auto fridgy shop to source the parts.

I had considered that but it looks like it is one long belt powering everything..

It is possible to buy a shorter serpentine belt so as to bypass the AC Compressor. If you go down that road don't leave it too long though to fix the problem, otherwise the system will leak down when not in use and will end up costing you heaps more to get going again, if you want it going again that is.
