Quick question before I go blind reading article after article after article after article...
1.8 petrol 2002 Hardback – accelerating from low revs I get a tinny rattle from underneath the car (middle/front ish). I thought I’d found the problem when I discovered the exhaust centre section mount had rusted off the pipe (removed the broken part and things improved a bit so I guess that wasn’t the whole problem). No rattle when revving the engine whilst parked. Are there any common areas I can start with or should I just start with the front number plate and keep working my way back until I get to the rear plate? Cheers all.

just a though but check the sump guard is fixed too. then get underneath and with two hands rattle stuff, find what loose.

mine has done this for about a thousand miles.

i'd put it down to the cat but could be the heatshield above the cat.

i just turn the radio up :)

Freelaner - can't turn the radio up, I blew all the speakers a few weeks back...

Thanks for the advice guys, looks like a weekend under the car (swore I'd give that up when I sold my last P6!).

On my Freelander there is a small heat shield on the front pipe just under the gearbox, I don't think this can be seen with the under tray in place.

Sounds like a knackered drive shaft . You could search how to check a damaged drive shaft cv joint .

If its a rattle over uneven ground , it could be a knackered drop link .

It could also be something else thats not yet happened to mine .

I had what I thought was a little metallic rattle on one of my other cars but it turned out to be a little pinking. It is a high performance engine (m3) so I switched to super unleaded and it stopped. Could be worth trying a tank to see if it affects it?

Had thought of that myself Chris, the timing belt was done (along with the head gasket) before I picked the car up - I did wonder if the timing was out. I need to fill up today anyway so will slop a tank of the good stuff in just to see what happens. Jeez, this is getting more and more like my old v8 P6 every day, can you get strip speedo’s for Freelanders?

Mine has a little heat shield underneath the sump or gearbox it's easy to find. It was loose and I knew it would rattle so I put a jubilee clip around it. Could be that as Jimbo also suggested.

Will.

And the winner is... drum-roll... :drum: ... CHRIS!

Filled up with Shell V-Power on Friday and I can’t believe the difference. Smoother running, more grunt, quieter, and the rattle is gone! Never heard pinking like that before, would have put good money on finding something loose but there you go. Thanks to everyone for their input.

Right, next job, diff bushes... speakers... exhaust... rob bank to pay for it all... anyone know where you can get cheap balaclavas?

Happy days....!

If it just had it's HG done though (do you know if it was pinking before?) I'd be tempted to ask the garage why it would start doing it now.

For example, I know the pinking in an M3 can be caused by a tiny hairline crack in the HG between one of the cylinder walls.

Good luck with the bank robbery but don't even think about using the FL as a getaway car!
