Well I would not use either neat. The Defender TD5 will be capable of
running on modified vegetable oil. You need to record though if you are in
the UK your exact usage and pay tax on it.

One recipe that appears to work very well is the following:-

Take 5 litres of Cooking Oil and add 100 ml of White Spirit (Turpentine
substitute) and allow it to mature for two weeks, this thins it down and
modifies the vegetable oil.

I would the add this to 10 gallons of normal diesel in the winter and 5
gallons in the summer, mixing it in the tank is sufficient. Do not be
tempted to mix it 50/50 as starting becomes difficult.

A rato of 1:5 in the summer and 1:10 in the winter.

You will notice less engine noise and a distinct bacon butty smell from
the exhaust.

Hmmm... Have I not seen reference to landies (and similar) running on old
filtered chip sunflower oil some while back???

I also remember some complicated articles on chemical procedures to do a
'proper' conversion to the the oil so that mixing with diesel is not
required....

Someone please remind me of the website??.. Run by a bloke in Hong Kong, who
drove land rovers there from the UK on oil... or similar!!

Cheers... Chris
