Hi all
Am thinking of getting a Rangie for the winter and to tow a horse trailer. In the past I had a Disco but it suffered from terrible rot, the back floor was attached to the rubber mat when you lifted it up - not an MOT issue so it was OK!!! Do Rangies suffer from the same rot issues? I want a 2.5 diesel and have an up to 4k budget am I dreaming??

Advice would be appreciated :D

The Range Rover classic is a design from the early 1970s so tends not to be space efficient inside. The Disco seems to be much better here. Just satisfy yourself that the RRC has enough space inside for you. Each have their own little 'issues', for example:

RRC

Sagging headlining
Seat trim very fragile
Rear doors (upper and lower) prone to rot

Disco

Sills and boot floor rust

Both have other known rust spots, eg inner front wings, rear wheelarches, etc. But its not too complicated to weld and fix these, and a lot of them will have already been repaired by now - to varying degrees of quality.

You're much more likely to find a diesel Disco than RRC. Wasn't there some issue with the VM engine? Other standard engines used in the RRCs lifetime were the 200TDi and 300TDi - the latter only in the last few years, I think. You might well find an engine conversion one (200/300TDI or plenty of other diesel engines, eg Isuzu 2.8, etc)

plenty of diesel P38s on fleabay for that sort of money mate, dont suffer as bad as the rrc with rot but has its own problems.... research them.

both betta than a disco imho

As above, really. The P38 2.5 DSE (or later and more luxurious DHSE) RR was much more common than the Classic diesels I think. The 300TDi's only came in later soft dash models, but the 200 TDi's are good - the VM diesel is best avoided from what I hear.

Have you thought about an LPG converted V8? Plenty about, and I always feel a Range Rover should have a V8 under the bonnet - personal preference!

Any Range Rover beats a Disco for me - just in a different league of class I reckon! :)

for under 4k you should be able to get a decent p38 or even a td5 disco which dont seem to suffer the rot the earlier models did.

both nice to drive, both have their possible faults but have a bit search and you will know what to look for
