Hi, and happy new year !

In the new year, I'm planning on buying either a range rover or disco 3.

By price, I think it will be a 2005 RR , or a 2007 Disco, but am having trouble deciding which.

I much prefer the shape of the range rover, but think the discovery may be the practical (financial) choice.

It wont be doing huge amount of mileage, and it will be a mix, some will be on tracks/around the farm , and the rest on good roads... But I'm sure both will do.

So how to decide? Is it obvious when one is chosen over the other...
(please point me to threads if there have been many covering this, but I couldn't find any with search :( )

Are there huge running / service costs differences ? Is the 2-3 year age difference going to really show in long term costs?

Thanks for any suggestions/thoughts... And hope you all have a great new year

The range rover (not the sport) I would choose disco 3/range rover sport are chavy motors

new land rovers are all electric so the d3 will be better is you ask me as its newer ...
but its ur money and ur looking at least at the 15000 mark for a d3 so its a lot of money so get the car you want ..... test drive them both ... then chose wat you want ..

Disco 3's are amazing (I have one). You may as well a 7 seater one with air suspension, it would be stupid not to have the option of more seats. we have a 7 seat with air suspension and it's brilliant. The Range Rover and Disco are very similar. The problem with both of them is there is now way you can do any major repairs yourself. Ours is in for a clutch at the moment because it's too heavy to work on without a proper garage with ramps etc. When the clutch went it also messed up the gear sensors that tell you what gear you're in (not that we need that). That, in turn, stopped the parking sensors working because it couldn't tell if it was in reverse. All these things need to be re calibrated so they're not a job you can do. It will be about £750 in the end. I'm not trying to put you off either, just highlight that you need to take into account the cost if something goes wrong on either.

its all personall preference, both good for roads (and off if ya brave enough).Drive em both and decide which ya want the most.Neither are simple to fix or cheap diyers motas.

On a Desiel Disco 3, Land Rover recommend taking the WHOLE body off to replace the Turbo

Err No thanks!

Which is a good reason to buy a petrol version - there's no replacement for displacement!!!

Personally I'd go for the Range Rover - 2007 and on - /problem with front props' solved) and I like the design better than the Disco which I find to agricultural....

I like both but i know a few people who have changed their range rovers for the disco 3 and space wise the d3 is much more spacious. The extra seats are not like the old disco you can actually fit a full size person in them!

Would it be betterer to go for the D3, as there's likely to be more on the road, so betterer amount of parts available for repairs? Also garages will be more familure with them?

I've driven a D4 off road. A D3 is simular, which makes it a fantastic vehicle.

Chap told me about the turbo body lift thing. The dealer he worked at had a way of doing it without lifting the body off, using a kit of home made funny welded spanners to access nuts etc. It worked some of the time, but was difficult and tight on workspace. Hence the lift to make it easier.

Thanks for the comments so far,

seems so far, is a personal preference thing, and as always younger is better esp. In these days with so many electro gizmos on board.
(glad to hear disco owners are very happy with theirs)

of course I plan to go test both, but really want to let the brain work, before my heart gets to involved :)

Although British, I'm actually living in Switzerland at the mo, and (perhaps?) surprisingly there are a lot more RR available than discos, so might things a bit.

What about running/maintenance costs? Are they similar in terms of cost for replacement parts ... (hmm I'll go check mpg too)

Also I think im looking at 90000 km (55000 of your earth miles) for 2006, is this reasonable or the point where problems start to set in ?

Thanks again

You can buy a hawkeye from bearmach to help with the diagnostics. Got one for my Freelander.

Botton left of page: Bearmach

if your going up or down mountain roads in an auto, the MPG wont be great. I know some of the motorways can be hilly also in parts of switzerland, so this wont help your MPG average if this is a concern.

55k on a 5ish year old car is about average

Switzerland - then there's no doubt in my mind - a Range Rover - and I'd go for a petrol V8 without supercharger - or maybe a TDV8 - that diesel is simple made by genious engineers and a dash of divine intervention - POWER!!! and decent fueleconomy...

don't go for the 3.0 TD6 - it's slow, noisy, boring - has no culture at all!!!

Been to Switzerland a couple of times and Range Rover are everywhere LOL - if you need more than 5 seats - get the rear seating from Overfinch.

If I want Disco - I'll go to a night club!!!
