Hey folks!

After several months of trouble free motoring I think my drivers wheel bearing is on its way out. Bit of a whir into work earlier and when I got there wheel was scorching hot. Definitely not a brake problem as I've done a full brake and caliper overhaul this year.

So suspect it's the bearing.

I've had a look at rave which is self explanatory so I figure for the cost of a garage to do it why not buy the tools and have a go myself . Will probably renew ball joints etc on the suspension while I'm at as there is a slight knock on the front.

Has anyone had a go at swapping the wheel bearings out and if so any tips. Any cheap tool recommendations?

I wouldn't expect a wheel bearing being worn would make your wheel get that hot, more likely to be brake, jack it up give it a shake ,feel if there is a knock,

As already pointed out a slight knock could be loads of different front suspension issues and sounds like brakes more than bearing. If you jack it up and see if the wheel turns freely when cold and hot.

A wheel bearing normally makes a noise more on cornering which might give you a clue.
Have a look at my thread below which will give you an idea of what could be involved although i didn't remove the complete hub.

Cheap pullers can be bought from ebay or machine mart but you wont really know if they fit until you get the hub off so like i did with the ball joint splitters, i bought a few different types as they were cheap.

I changed the passenger side front wheel bearing on my td6 and it was a pig to do ended up taking the whole hub assembly to a local garage to get the bearing out and new one pressed in ,

bearing i agree is a pig to do without a press to do the job, as for your wheel being hot sticking brake caliper is what my money is on, mine used to get hot then cause other problems because of the heat caused from it being stuck on

Thanks for the replies guys... Great write up holidaychicken, thanks!

Well jacked the car gave the wheel a good shake no play whatsoever... Checked the ball joints no obvious play so the knock remains a mystery!

But, got the caliber off and found the piston boot had split and had taken water on causing a rusted/seized piston. Freed it up have it a light sand and coated it In hydraulic paste... No problems since and overheating has completely stopped. Bought a new piston and seal/boot set off eBay for £28 which I'll hopefully fit this weekend then job done (at least that job done anyway!)

Cheers guys!
