Ive been window shopping today, seen 2 Rangies. A 4.0 & a 2.5.
the bloke in the garage said to stay away from the petrols...in his opinion.
BUT ive also been told the 2.5 diesel in a gutless slug with the bmw engine init.
I'm running a 200Tdi discovery at the mo and have been for a few years and i dont wanna upgrade to downgrade if ya know wot i mean. My disco is really quick (for wot it is).
So in short, is there a range rover diesel that wont wind me up after a week. Ill be really gutted if i get rid of me lovely landy for a lovely gutless rangie.
Any ideas?
Jay

hi about the 2.5 bmw engine it is abit underit powered on acceleration tunless you fit a chip to if you want a range rover for power yuo want the td6 v6 diesel regards jamie 1966

As Jamie says, but why didn't you take them for a test drive?? the thing about power it always = MPG and your looking at 21 MPG in a V if your lucky, some will do less and some a little more, but im happy with a chiped 2.5 BMW, if i wanted a fast cat i woudnt have got a Range Rover with the aerodynamics of a brick

Hi guys
I didnt take either of them for a test coz the 1st 1 I saw was soo penned in it would of taken a week to get it out...the second, well by then my ikkle lad was fast off in the landy...
The bloke I talked to did say summut bout chipping and putting a larger intercooler on..but had no idea about price.
I dont want a super fast thing, thats not my point.I already have a fast can and bike for that. I was jus worried that it wud be very sluggish.
I read a review on here sumwhere saying standard they are 130 horses ish...chipped and bigger intercoolered more like 200...like I sed before its not about performance....my bro has a pajero (****er in mexican) 2.8 looks ok to me till i drove it..it was like driving a 20 tonne tank on a metro engine..my disco leaves him for dust...but hey thats not wot its all about to me;)
Ive had many good years in my disco & im still not bored of it..if i can make a 2.5 RR bout the same for not too much expence, then thats my weopon of choice.
Jay

chipped and bigger intercooler (i had mine done) you can get it done pretty cheap for cash, and the same for the intercooler too you can save lots of ££ with paying cash, 2.5 6 pot isn't the fastest thing you'll ever have but its fine by me makes a difference on motorways (cruses now at 85 and had lower revs) from standing start also a big difference

Go for the petrol i have just gone from a 2.5d to a 4.6 and the performance is vast between the two. This is just an opinion but why tune a 2.5d, surley in the long run you are over stressing the engine and asking it to do somthing that is was not designed to do. The petrol engine is what makes a range rover a range rover smooth, refined and a bit of an animal when you want it. Again this is only an opinon and you do have to take fuel econamy into account the petrol gulps fuel and the diesel just drinks it.

Now hears the rub (and its not the first time i have been told this either) when BMW gave the engine to Land Rove for the RR they didn’t want it to out perform there own brand 4X4 so they chipped it (the Landy RR) with a less powerful chip the chip I have now (which is used in all BMW Manufactured cars using the 2.5 6 pot) is the chip its meant to have and wad designed for, so it isn’t under powered and its not over powered, its as it should be, with the chip i now have and the intercooler, my MPG is also a little better, on motorways it cruses now, with lower RPM, i myself would love a V but i couldn’t run it they way it drinks petrol, so its a compromise, and i know of 2 people who (and i advised them NOT to buy petrol) went and sold on and got a diesel, i have driven LOADS of RR and discos (i used to work for Virgin Atlantic as a chauffeur, and we used to swap them over from new every 10,000 miles or 3 months (the 10,000 always came up first) and I have driven every engine and size make and model of Landy from new, that’s why I know (for me) the 2.5 BMW is the best for me

Just out of curiousity what 4x4 were bmw building at the time they gave the 6 banger to land rover ?
As far as performance the bmw 525 was 161bhp at the wheels and the range rover was 134bhp so how is this a detuned version as the bm is a road car higher ratio in the box and 40mpg, and the range rover has a off/on road gear box and a transfer box lower ratio and 25mpg. So the range rover has a higher tuned engine as oppose to the bm as if you took the transfer box away adding 30-40 bhp and a higher ratio box + 25 - 30 bhp the range rover would be 169bhp which is 8bhp higher than the bmw.

I have got a 200tdi disco but when i got my 2.5 DHSE i could not believe they where the same size engine.Disco pulls well but the DHSE just flies ,i think the little box on the inner wing may help .

Morning Coolboarder

heres my path to a p38:)

I was looking for "the right" P38 for about a total of 6 months
my aim was to source a late 2001 P38 DSE Auto with the 2.5 BMW 5 series diesel and light beige interior
The V8 was really out of the question for insurance & local taxation reason & the 2002 model was just going for ridiculous prices with ridiculous milage on them.
Finally i found a Dark blue metallic at Sept 2001 with beige leather interior and VDO Nav system with 109,000 Kms on the speedo
As I was doing the rounds I did the test drive thing and in nearly all cases seller either private or dealer always excused the performance on the 2.5!
Having had my other vehicle (series III with a 300tdi motor & boxes) up graded with a full width intercooler - i knew that there was potentially more to be had from the P38 with 136 BHP
Not being a big fan of re-chiping I took the newly purchased P38 on a recent business trip over into (onto) the UK & whilst there had it done.
The trip out about 900 Kms on continental & Uk roads allowed me to really get a feel for the vehicle. and its limitations.
where it comes in to its own is its ability to run 500 Kms and to get out as if you had just got in.
Anyways I digress...
Handed the Vehicle in and took a day for all the work to be done - include re-chiping / enlarged intercooler and re-positioning of the oil cooler.
Picked it up later the following evening & Yep what a difference.
"pulls like a train" is a under-statement although you are never going to have the same snap in performance from a smaller vehicle the growl and the additional torque was clearly there.
having read that not only the performance was improved but the economy too, I was really interested to see how that matched expectations. In short i was not disappointed.
at 110 KPH (70 MPH) i was getting a constant 5.9 - 6.2 Ltrs per 100KMS and this was without strain.
The whole set-up seem better matched transmission to motor seem more at ease and overall a much easier (nicer) vehicle to drive)
Each week i do the eqiv or a Manchester to London & back run and a extra 150 miles running about so for me to have a vehicle that would just run & run
Additionally, the vehicle uses a KN filter in the air box & a up-rated Bilstein steering damper to replace the Armstrong.
Overall I would only reinforce what Dopey had to say that the a re-chiping DSE is the way to go but budget the re-chipping in your budget as to ensure that you drive the true potential of the conv from day one.
happy trails
Abe
