Hi everyone,

One of the head gaskets( LH froM drivers position) on my 1993 3.9l Range
Rover has gone, can anyone tell me how much work is to change it and is
there any thing in particular I should be aware of.

I have worked on other 3.5l V8's but have never worked on a Range Rover.

Thanks

It's not that hard. If you've worked on something with a 3.5 Rover V8 in
then the 3.9 is equally easy.

It's even explained in the Haynes Book Of Lies.

It's no more difficult. make sure you don't knacker any injectors or
injector wiring, and reseal the plenum box appropriately.

Nick:

Not terribly difficult but will take the better part of 2 days if careful.
Get a head gasket kit with new bolts. These are torque to yield bolts and
should not be reused. Make sure you have a quality torque wrench.

I went for the composite gaskets and have had no problems. Replace both
sides while you at it, its just a few more bolts. Remember the exhaust
guskets too; both at the manifold and the cat down tubes.

Some will tell you to reground the valves being that you have to take the
head off anyhow. Check them, they may not need it. Good luck.

3.5 and 3.9 do not use torque-to-yield bolts, they are only fitted to late
4.2, 4.0 and 4.6 engines. Easy way to tell:- if washer is loose on the bolt,
they are re-useable, if washer is part of the bolt (flanged head bolt) then
they are stretch bolts and cannot be reused.

Good advice. I don't fit anything other than the composite gaskets nowadays,
the tin ones are crap!

Replace the valve springs, grind the valves and fit new valve stem oil seals
(inlets only) while the heads are off. It's not unknown for a valve spring
to break at high mileage, and the stem oil seals are normally shot by
70,000miles anyway.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, I have just got a top end set, with
tin gaskets ! (I've just checked) .... Oh dear!!
