Hi, not had a great week. Got a internal knock on my Evoque. Looks like I’ll be needing a new/reconditioned engine. Haven’t really got a spare 5-7k sat around to pay someone. So looks like I’ll be doing it myself. Has anyone took this job on. Just wondering how long to swap over and will I need to get fuels pumps or anything programmed once fitted. It’s a 2.2 sd4. At least I have my defender still so have transport while I sort things out. Thanks.

Hi

Sorry to hear of the issues , theres a few videos ive seen which hopefully may be useful to u

last video shows the rebuild

these are supposed to be good , haven’t used them personally, , also there’s turner engineering

Assume JLR arnt interested in helping , once again sorry to hear about the issues

@Pablo63

also forgot to say there are some other utube videos online , plus pretty sure I have some links for workshop manuals if there of use

hope the above is useful to u

Hi thanks looked at loads of videos. Unfortunately that’s not the correct engine as mine has a belt and it seems beyond a timing issue. I’ll look in to ovalautosthough. Cheers

Ur so very welcome , sorry there not the correct engine

plse feel free to shout if u get stuck regarding manuals

indeed , heard really good things about oval autos, many have used them in the discovery 3/4 forum where they’ve bought engines etc also seen feedback there customer service is also good

plse let us know how u get on

It's just a Freelander 2 engine, no programming needed unless you're swapping over the ECM, which wouldn't achieve anything.
If the replacement engine comes with injectors, then those will need programming to the ECM.

There are plenty of second hand engines on ebay for the FL2, which is the same engine as the 2.2 Evoque unit, as long as you get an engine with the same gearbox.

What's up with yours? They're normally really durable engines, seldom failing under 200k miles.

Not sure exactly yet but when I initially broke down slight nock and limited performance. Got recovered home after 18 hours with the RAC. Never use them again. By the time I got home and everything had cooled down horrendous knock.. definitely internal and seems to be top left. Timing belt good. Off work next week so going to investigate further. Came up with the following faults. Manifold absolute pressure.mass or volume air flow correlation. Mass or volume air a flow circuit range performance air flow to low. But no idea what that could be.

If you can bet access to live data and see how the maf and map respond while the engine is running. It could be an air intake issue that is causing bad fuelling and a knock. Hopefully there isn't an engine fault mechanically....

There have been the odd issues with rockers coming adrift from the hydraulic tappet. This can make a horrible noise if that happens.
Does the knock sound like crankshaft speed, or half crankshaft speed?
If it's a rocker come adrift, then it's actually pretty easy to see once the top cover is removed. Make sure you have the correct Loctite (518 IIRC) to reassemble once repaired if that's a that's up.

It could also be an injector which is over fueling, which can give diesel knock.

A code showing a MAF/MAP correlation error is normally down to split boost hoses, there are 4 to check.

Get the workshop manual too, which is available to download from here in @Hippo signature.
If it has suffered terminal engine failure (very uncommon), then you should be able to get a second hand unit with comparable miles from sellers on ebay.

Thanks guys. Busy with work at the moment but will investigate further next week. Was thinking possibly diesel knock initially but extremely bad if it is. I’ll updat you when I strip.

And I suppose if all else fails

Hi, had a bit of a play this afternoon and leaning towards injector. Or It might just be wishful thinking. Fault codes cleared and not returned. I removed and check all inlet hoses no issue found but faults gone. However nothing to do with the knock unfortunately. Difficult to start but has white smoke out of exhaust. So how do I confirm if it’s diesel knock without splashing out on new injectors. battery went flat while playing so will have to try again on Wednesday so any tips would be great. Thanks.

If the smoke smells like rancid diesel then it's a stuck open injector. If you can do a leak down test the return fuel from each should be equal. Not to much and just small equal amounts.
If you have one that has no return or another that fills a bottle quickly then the rule is to change them all. ;)

White smoke sounds like excess diesel so pointing at injector stuck open. If you put a screwdriver to the bone forward of your ear and press it against the engine can you pinpoint which cylinder the knock is coming from? Or a £20 electronic mechanic's stethoscope off eBay if you have one if those.
