Range Rover cranks but won't fire

Hi all,

I've got a 2004 Range Rover HSE Vogue, last week it wouldn't start. Went out to it, it cranked over but wouldn't actually fire up, it seemed to have HDC activated which I never have on & it was saying something about DSC too.

I fiddled with the key a bit, no change so I went inside had a brew, came back & all was well. I had to turn off the HDC when I was driving along so I just thought something had got knocked and thought no more of it.

Went out to it today and it was again cranking over but not actually starting. It was now saying HDC inactive, tried over several hours to start it to no avail. I've changed the battery in the key, the battery in the vehicle & no change at all apart from it's now saying air suspension inactive as well.

I tried to start it using easy start but it's having none of it, I'm wondering if something's kicked in due to the low battery, assuming that was the initial problem and now I need to get the fault code cleared? Has anyone suffered similar?
 
Turn you steering lock to lock to clear the suspension inactive
what engine do you have and do you have any diagnostic kit ?
My 04 4.4 lost its immobiliser sync which is a main dealer or faultmate and possibly Gap diagnostics, mine occurred when i disconnected my battery.
Fuel pump relay, fuel pump are possible but i dont know much if you have a diesel.
Multiple electronic faults are normally battery related
 
Aah well there in is my problem. I can't get the engine running to reset anything, it sounds like it's going then doesn't, it's a 2.9 litre diesel.

Is there anything I can do on my drive or is it a diagnostics job?
 
It's a Yuasa SMF 12V 95AH 850A battery, I got it at Andrew Pages & it was what they recommended not that that means it's any good mind

Hate to tell you but it's not strong enough for a Vogue. Which is why I was making sure. You need a 110Ah and a CCA of 920 , trust me I knows.
 
Bloody hell thats annoying I told them what I needed as well he asked for the reg number I never even thought of that, I've kept the old battery thank god I'll stick that on charge and see if I can get any joy with that and take the new one back & change it Monday.

The real joke of it is the guy was so patronising calling me sweetheart & actually asked me if my husband had given me a note of what I needed . Wait till I see him Monday

Unfortunately, I spent 3yrs and 5 batteries, on warranty, before anyone clicked why my batteries kept failing. By which time my original battery was long gone, so I had to suck up the cost of the correct battery, as I couldn't prove they'd got it wrong 3yrs ago. There are two types of battery for the L322, the lower rated is fine for the HSE and people don't think to check what or why there is a difference.
A sure fire way to tell is that the bigger rated will only fit in the battery bay with a couple of mill to spare. Also to save wasted time faffing about, you need to open the bonnet to service mode and drop it straight in.
Make sure you call him sweetheart and ask if his mummy can help as you would prefer someone who knows the job.;)
 
Yes this ones too small dropped in the battery bay easily, I never noticed it being much smaller than the other but it was raining & I had just had to endure the "help" of my teenage son holding the bonnet up whilst I took it off the gas struts which had resulted in me nearly breaking my fingers ;)
 
I just checked the battery I took out & I don't think that was big enough either maybe that's what's caused my problem. I've taken off a Bosch S3 013 which up till now seem to have worked alright, very odd! I'm going to charge it up and see if it'll kick over tomorrow before I throw my new battery at the chauvinist on Monday lol
 
This is the battery i have had for a while now and is great, you can order it on ebay but still collect in your local store and is cheaper than buying from the store even with the promo code normally. i pad £113 when i got it a couple of years ago, unless you have some other underlying fault it certainly sounds like an inadequate battery as already pointed out as they need a certain amount of amps before the system will allow it to start i believe.

So I put the old Bosch battery on charge yesterday and still no joy today, I did however notice when I was looking round that the interior lights seemed to have been set to being permanently on. I'm guessing this might have happened last week when I first encountered the problem & I was out there in the dark, so over the course of a week they could well have tipped an already on its way out battery over the edge.

The old battery is showing as fully charged but I've no way to test if it's got bad cells I'm just guessing, I'm hoping Euro carparts up the road is open so I can try a more powerful battery in it. Fingers crossed that's the problem
 
Euro carp parts have a weekend deal on, if you are going to there.Not sure if it is valid for batteries but worth a try.
