OK, i asked a similar question recently referring to an LSE (http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f10/lse-engine-swap-300tdi-144488.html) and discovered the following:

- 300 Tdi should set me back £250-£300
- R380 gearbox will fit both, although the bell housings and primary input shafts are different between the V8 and the diesels - is that a manual? Excuse my ignorance.

So, what I now need to know is:

- how much can I expect to pay someone to do the swap - I don't have the equipment or expertise, sadly!
- what other parts do I need? Cooling system, drivetrain, electricals?
- is it worth it? I'm only considering it as I can get a solid V8 RRC cheap, and can then fit a 300 Tdi engine to get the vehicle I want.

Given I plan on driving this across the Pyrennes and down through Morocco, am I asking for more trouble than its worth by doing an engine swap?

Advice welcome!

yes its worth it if body /chassis good and if its what you want,i would look at cost of 300 tdi disco as donor as thats all the bits you need,if needed cost of conversion of gearbox from v8 to tdi would be £400 including recon at same time or £150 for just shaft + bell housing, cost of fitting if donor vehicle £600 +£300 for new water pump ,timing belt ,lift pump ,filters, new rad £100,old one usually poor, would do gearbox even if 300tdi r380 version usually need brgs and baulk rings rev gear etc easy job ,make could reliable vehicle if done properly, and wouldnt look like conversion and std parts can be used

Hmm, soon adds up thou, doesnt it! Looking at £1,500 + the car, not really worth it I don't think! Bugger.

It's always the same with these 'economy' conversions, if you have to pay someone to do the work the total cost of the job would buy a great deal of unleaded.

I've just finished converting a 1973 2door to a 300tdi with regards to the imput shaft i used the v8 spigot bush and turned a spacer down on the lathe and loctited it in. on the down side the conversion took me a full week on work thats 40 hours @ £35 an hour the prices soon rack up with a few parts and other niggles that you always find whilst changing them over
