Hi All.
I looking for some advise please I have a Range Rover Classic 3.9 Auto on a 92 plate. I'm having problems with the gearbox when I first got it, it was fine but after towing a caravan for 30 miles whith no problems. After i reversed the caravan i continued my journey home approximately 1 mile into this i lost all drive. I pulled over and went through all gears then it worked fine again.1 week later I set off in the car it wouldn't change gear until you hit 5000 rpm after this it seemed fine. For next 20 miles. At the next opportunity I changed the gearbox oil unfortunately I couldn' separate the exhaust so couldn't do the filter. The oil which came out was black, a bit Concerning. I refilled the oil and tried it but still the same. When I parked it up I went to move it 5 days later only to find it drove 6 foot then lost all gears. I left it 2 days and tried it again as before 6 foot and lost all gears again. I acknowledge it needs the filter doing and more oil nut can anyone give me any other ideas or is it new box time.
Thanks Andy.

Hopefully by 'oil' you mean automatic transmision fluid and not EP!
Drain & change the filter. If the filter is blocked/partially blocked then that will cause problems so leaving it isn't an option.
The contamination could well point to replacement box time. If you do have to do that then you need to replace the torque converter as well as that will also contain a lot of contamination which you don't want in the replacement. It's usually suggested to do the cooler as well but thorough flushing might suffice.
This from Ashcroft Transmissions covers it in more detail: http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/frequently-asked-questions/4hp22-faq-s.html

Hi Ratae. I have used ATF Dexron3 as I was told this is compatible with Dexron 2 but is a better oil. Thanks for the link I'll look at this. Ill drain out the oil agin and have a look at that see how it looks. Thanks for the guidance. Much appreciated.

Think you'll find the RRC uses ZF4HP22 which is a dipstick for level check - also filled via the dipstick tube.

Good point. You're quite right about the fill, considerably more when filled from completely empty as the TC will also be empty. This will usually be when fitting a new gearbox & TC although if you do remove the box & TC & then remove & tip the TC on its side (or it falls off as it's not fastened to the gearbox input shaft) you'll be surprised just how much fluid it contains. You'll also be surprised at just how heavy it is. Guess how I know....
Not the case if you're just doing a change fluid & filter change as the TC holds a lot of fluid & can't be drained.

From completely empty approx 9 litres, drain & change approx 5 litres the link gives their recommended procedure for the RRC/Disco 1 box. IIRC the last time I did a fluid & filter change it was nearer 6 than 5. Keep checking as you fill.
