Well update on gearbox, it's now give up the ghost . So my question is has anyone thought about or done a Zf gearbox to the TD6? if this is at All possible and what's involved in the conversation?

yes and it drives perfect, and i remember seeing some were of someone fitting the zf box

Putting the ZF5hp24 in would be a waste of time it's almost as fragile as the GM unit.

Best do either a manual conversion or rebuild the GM unit with Sonnax components.

well when i was researching fitting the manual i was told they are all interchangeable, the fly in the ointment would be the length of the box, any difference would move the transfer box and need adapted props, plus ecus would be different if using auto
