Hi everbody.
I'm Mark and new on here, Hey a big HELLO from me to all of you.
Right quick bit of advice Re: the common BMW 2.5 Diesel hot start problem.
I have a 1998 2.5 DSE with this problem.
She starts lovely when cold, all glow plugs working fine, but as soon as she is hot it will take up to 10 seconds of cranking and then she fires with a cloud of soot out her tail pipes.
I have seen the mods on ebay for the timed relay hot fix kits @ £29.95.
Are these any good and will they solve the problem and if so are there any long term effects which may damage the ECU or cold start system.
From what I have read the timed relay of approx 30 seconds fools the ECU into thinking the engine is cold thus over coming the hot start problem.
Any advice before I buy would be great.
Thanks
Mark.

Hi I have the same issue so fitted a kit from EBAY and all is well. One problem the kit was sent with a 9K resistor when you need a 2K resistor so worth checking as it will over fuel and make you care rev at 1500rpm. Very easy to fit too.

been following these threads with alot of interest, from what i can gather t problem lies in t fuel injection pump and i think it s on t electric side but im no expert. it seems that bmw put in a system that on cold start, t in tank pump pressurises t system glow plugs on engine starts, however on hot start t pump in t tank dont come on until t engine is running and using fuel, have seen somewhere where a guy put a live to t in tank pump. a friend of mine had a volvo truck with t same problem, fine on cold not on hot ,pour cold water on t pump imediate start, he sent t pump away they put a new ecu on t pump the mechanical part of t pump was fine, problem solved, so i think its a case of pay your money and take your chances, i think i d go t pump route. hope that helps.

Hi Mark

The hot fix only fixes it for so long until the pump needs changing. i had the same problem at the begining of this year and fitted the hot start fix which is a timed relay that advances the injector pump so cause preasure in the pump enough to open the injectors. this in my opinion only masks the problem and increases the wear on the pump. i am now getting the pump replaced as even though the hot start fixes the hot starting to a degree, it is still a bit hit or miss as to weither it starts or not. i really wish i'd just had bitten the bullet and changed it earlier. it would have saved the AA coming out sveral times in the last few months due to battery running down through cranking the engine for too long when the hot start box didn't work!

hope that helps

i just recently fitted a simple button fix for this.
You have to open the ecu box behind the battery & take it out.
Find the grey/blue wire of the ecu(not the glow relay at the side)
This is the feed from the temp sensor
Cut this wire. Fit a long piece of wire to each end which you feed into the dash area.
Fit to this a push button or a toggle switch.
You operate this switch before turning the key when the engine is hot.
If using a push button it must be Normally Closed or push to break type.

This works perfectly for me & you control the time it's on which may only need tobe 5s not 30s

Thanks guys for all your help, reading all the posts about this problem it seems that the only long term cure is a new or recon pump. LOADS OF MONEY!

Just a quick one. I bought the hot fix kit from ebay, but have seen a quote on this post about the resister?? How do I know if the one I have purchased is fitted with a 9K resistor or the correct 2K resistor, can anybody please advise.

Time how long the glowplug light stays on, or put an ohm meter across the resistor assuming you know which one it is, or read the colour code on the resistor:D

If the resistor is wrong it makes the engine rev high for 30 seconds. Mine was at 1500rpm until I checked the unit. Chances are yours will be ok and I just bought a faulty unit from a rubbish seller.

Thanks datatek, Thanks Dean68uk your help has been great. I have not fitted it yet due to a busted oil cooler that I'm replacing so will fit the weekend.
Cheers Guys.
Mark.
