Hi I need some help/advise,
I have a Range Rover 1997 DSE, the Dash ABS Light comes on when the key is turned to the 2nd position, I start the engine, the ABS light stays on and then goes off after I have driven off, doing approx. 5mph. Is the correct?
As the MOT station expect the ABS light to go out after starting the engine and not when driving off. I am not sure if the ABS light is tell me I have an issue or not?
I would like to see if possible a short video, if someone could take one of exactly happens to the ABS light in their Range Rover.
Many thanks Neil

It does a system check on startup then goes off after moving away. It's normal. Our mot station says the same. I have to keep reminding him that's what it does!! Only worry when it doesn't go out after moving off.;)

Hi Mark, many thanks. When you say 'it does a system check on start up' what exactly does this mean? As the ABS light comes on when turning the key to position 2, stays on at starting and when driving off until I reach 5MPH, then does out. Is this OK?
In the Range Rover Hand Book, it says that 'when the key goes to position 2, the ABS light should light for 1 second then, go out and come straight back on and stay on until the car reaches 5mph'
Does your ABS light flicker off? then straight back on?
Many thanks
Neil

Hi Mark, Please could you email the video, I have read that the P38 1994 to 1999 were all the same many thanks Neil

Mine's a '97, the light stays on until moving at about 5mph.
It's working correctly if it's doing that. If the MOT tester fails it because it doesn't go out, show them this taken from the electrical circuits manual in RAVE and ask him to drive it at 6mph.
I've never heard of anyone ever having a problem with this at MOT time.

Just tried to email the vid'.
To large??..
If your light goes out after you pull away and stays off/out, then you are good to go! If there is a problem, you then get the most reliable thing on the bus , the dashboard beeper telling you
Along with a written message that there is an issue. Hope this puts your mind at ease... Edit your post and remove your email address!!
You'll be spammed to death!!!:p;)

Hi to all who have clarified the Range Rover P38 DSE ABS warning light operation, many thanks. I will take all the info back to the MOT station. At least I now know that my ABS system is working correctly and I do not have to consider fault finding and replacing expensive parts. Many thanks Neil

Too many NVQ mechanics doing MOT tests it would seem. When i did MOTs you had to have done a five year apprenticeship and been out of your time for three years before being considered. Now apparently they do an NVQ and sweep the garage for six months.

Blimey, I thought it had to stay on until it saw sufficient input from the ABS sensors to say each of the wheels was actually turning. Otherwise how would it ever know a wheel had lost traction for TC or be able to tell when a wheel had stopped moving. Only then can it say "Things are working as they should be" and reset the lamp on the dash. Well, it made sense to me at least.

That is the general idea.
