I could have taken that apart with my eyes closed......... now putting it together, well I wouldn't even have to bag the bits or label them, I would just throw them in the bin!
Bag them up and send them to Phil, it will give him something to do while he is asleep

wow i leave for a few days and the thread goes nuts!!! gave me a bloody good laugh catching up though, i am not going to comment on some of @holidaychicken photos...... what you do in your spare time is up to you! back to the box.. i have ordered the tranny jack..... no thats not a stripper!! and it should arrive on saturday, i have managed to get a day off on monday so im going to go at it (the gearbox that is) and hopefully get it out monday and get the TC sent off., in all fairness i think the box is ok and new rad and pipes would cure it holding gears but figured while its out and not broken i may aswell mess about with it replace parts it doesnt need and possibly fook it up!! what would you recommend are "definitely change that bit while its out!!" and again where is best to get these bits from.P.S. sorry for the radio silence i broke my phone so had to dig through a mountain of boxes to find my computer (recently moved into a house we are renovating, so have no space as half the house is being ripped out, have no free time and have no spare cash.. so thought it was obviously the perfect time to buy a Range Rover!)
P.P.S. i feel honoured the Legend himself @Bemble has seen my thread!!!!

We thought you'd ran off into the sunset with @Clock guy?;)
5.5 days you've been away, that's nearly 6 days!!!!
Absentee OPs shall hath their threads hijacked and violated, (it's in the rules)

(It's Alan's fault, he lures us in with his finger.)

the sunset does seem tempting right now.. still not told 'her indoors' the range needs surgery yet..... hoping she wont notice it sat on sleepers.. or the giant gearbox sat in my workroom.... next to the transfer box... or see me post off the TC..... oh i'm so dead..... oh well at least its roomy in the back of the range as i think thats where i'll be sleeping!! apparently i should be spending my money on important things!!! like a kitchen fitted ready for christmas or a roof over the dining room that doesnt require buckets to be changed, honestly the cheek of this woman is unbelievable!!!

If you can keep Phil on side you will breeze through your rebuild but he is a man in demand so we can play it by ear and hopefully he can fill all the gaps that the rest of us guess at, Saint is his wingman when it comes to trannys ......

Ok, this will start you off, the ZF manual taken from the JPAT site

And for a little light bedtime reading,

This is a quote from Phil's work, think this may be from my repair .

You should certainly replace the B-clutch hub to C-clutch drum bearing that they have quoted for. Interesting that they haven’t quoted for the three steel pipes (which you should also replace) or the output shaft O-ring (also unique to the 032 model) which you should replace along with the lip seal, particularly as you have a leak. You need to ensure that they're supplying a genuine OEM Filtran filter and not some cheap pattern part....

I think the first item may be not needed on the following receipt but i need to check, one of the items that was a known fail was sorted by the time the ZF5HP24 made it into the RR. but it may be the service kit

I would try and purchase everything from Bemble if you can including the TC, or you can use JPAT or Sussex Autos but if Phil is keeping this gear still have a word with him.
I only used sussex autos as i drive past them every week so i could drop of my TC and pick it up but to be fair mine has been going well for a couple of years after they refurbished it for me.
I know i bought more than this, you need the steel pipes mentioned above (185999B..........Oil Tube Set, ZF5HP24 (BMW) (3 Pieces) 1995-Up.) but best thing is to have a look through the catalogue above and make a note of the part numbers and email JPAT or Sussex for a quote and both can refurb your TC or Phil can supply you one already refurbished most likely.

When i get a minute i'll go through and make a note of the part numbers i know of until reinforcements arrive

If you let me have the serial number off the green ID plate on the side of the casing I can tell you the date that the transmission was manufactured and therefore whether it had all the upgrades/modifications fitted. This may influence the parts that you need to buy.

I'll try to get those added to my Dropbox archive so they are all easily accessible in future!

Thanks @holidaychicken i certainly have some bedtime reading there!! Really appreciate all the help, really looking forward to pulling it apart and having a poke about with it, Going to try and get it all done asap as one thing I have learned about Good old LR is they don’t like sitting unused.... especially in frosty, damp weather sitting nearly 2 foot off the ground with its bowels removed... I have a real worrying feeling I’m going to put it all back together and something else will be broken!! Oh well I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it, how long roughly did it take to you start to finish? Just so I have a realistic time in my head!!

Gearbox stripping action begins on Aug 30th (page 6, post 102) and ends roughly Nov 11th, that's Holidays timeline, yours may be different.;) photo's need sorting though.
wow was it really that long ??
I think we did an oil and filter change first which did nothing apart from cost me some cash and then we went back in to do it properly.

We must have really taken our time. I don't remember much more than a week or two as we had to wait to get the TC back and we didn't exactly rush.
I am sure you will have the transmission out on day 1. It all looks very complicated until you start taking of really big lumps and very quickly you get to see this underneath

And this on your lawn. notice the sunny weather ;)

Wow very jealous of that sunny weather!! I picked the best time of the year I think, cold, wet and windy! Just going out now to get a pic of the gearbox plate, waiting in for my tranny jack to arrive!

Ok here is a few pics I took this morning it would seem I have a rather large oil leak I think this is engine oil though as the sump is very wet, struggled to get under the car as it wouldn’t go into off road setting for reason however it did go into low range! So that will make climbing the ramps easier also I have a random pipe under the bonnet that seems to go nowhere and is just stuck up by the rocker covers anyone know where it’s suppose to go?
