Rain Water leak A post area.

I've done a search and come up with nothing relevant. There is no sunroof on my P38 but I have water dripping down the plastic in the drivers side footwell round the A post after heavy rain. Is it likely to be the windscreen? Or do the roof seams leak??

I recently had similar (although I do have the Sunroof)

I traced it to bad windscreen seal at the top and partway down one side....

To fix, I took the Windscreen side finishers off (3 screws each side of vehicle), then using a Tesco Clubcard of all things, un latched the 8(?) plastic clips that hold the top finisher strip on by sliding them to the leftside of vehicle, then pulled that off (becareful as it is made of aluminium I am guessing and is easily bent, like I did to mine).

I then cleaned the top and sides of the windscreen and cleand out all the crap.

A whole tube of cleaer silicone sealant was used all along the top and both sides - I was being very generous with it and absolutly caked the whole top and sides in the stuff makeing sure I filled every possible gap and crack.....

Before it cured I put the top finisher back on as with the sealant in place you wouldn't get the plastic clips back, this does now mean the Finisher is held fast in the sealant but it is better than wet carpets, and besides, with luck the next person to take it off would be Autoglass...!!!!

I made the best I could with the top finisher after bending it, but hey ho....

Put the Side finishers on and in the last 4 weeks we have had quite a bit of rain, and so far (fingers crossed) no leaks....but I did use a shed load of sealant....!!!

I did look under the roof rack plastic trim, to see if that was were the leak was from, but looking at how it was put together, I would doubt there was a leak there, unless it is corroded....but then again it is a P38 and anything is possible...!!!

Might be air intake drains blocked on the o/s - mine was dripping on the n/s and this fix sorted it -

Thanks for that Saint, I'll give that a go when I get rid of this bloody cold I picked up in the yUK. 996turbo, thats another place for me to look thanks. Kieronf, I've recently done the pollen filters as that was my first thought.

Mine wasn't actually the 'traditional' pollen filter problem, but a combination of blocked drains underneath the filter housing and water seeping it under the filter housing.............

I had water coming in a while ago - it was dripping off the sunvisor. Stripped the top windscreen finisher off, expecting to find the well documented hole where the panels join but couldn't see anything obvious. Slapped some silicon sealant in there anyway and it seems to have completely cured the problem.

That top finisher is a pig to get back on properly though. Would probly have helped if I had taken the side bits off.

Hi everyone,

After reading this thread I remembered that I also have a "hole" on top of my windshield see photo below. Is this the same things that you guys are talking about or different? Does anyone had the same "hole" on top of their screen? Does silicon will fix it? So far no leak nothing, but prudence is the mother of safety isn't it?

I never positively identified the source of the leak on mine, I did the pollen filter drains, the pollen filter covers and put silicone in the roof rack mounting hole. Leaks seems to have stopped but can't be sure as until the last couple of weeks or so we have not had heavy enough rain to test it properly.

Chances are tat it's a leak from the windscreen. Usually because of the bonding compound, if it's applied completely, will not leak. Unfortunately, if there is a break or slight gap in the bonding you could get a leak. You could remove the top outer top & bottom horizontal plastic trims and see if the bonding is correct.

Hi John, we have had seriously heavy and prolonged rain the last few days, the mill island is under water so we are looking out on a rather large lake
Pleased to report no water in the car I can't be sure which of the things I did fixed it, not bothered as long as it stays dry

same as me two month ago water drip on on the inside ,, i dismantle the strip op top of the windscreen , see nothing ,, driving it for a few dqy without the strip until a raining day that i saw water dripping in, apply litter force on the glass inside i notice the old ;;;M3;;; (;;;;; SILICON;;;; is not holding the glass , , first i put silicon but it didn,t do the job ,,,, strip the silicon away ;;;; put glass glue between it and it fit until now ;;;;

Where are the air intake drains. Thanks.

The drains are in the corners, underneath the pollen filter housings.
I've recently sorted my leak, this is what I did:
Take off side finishers and bottom windscreen trim. Take wipers off. Remove plenum cover. (3 parts. centre and 2 end pieces)
Remove pollen filters covers. If you can see that it is wet then it becomes clearer where the water is coming in. If it is wet in here (the filter itself wet) then it isn't a blocked drain. The water shouldn't get in here. On mine it seemed to be the screw on the corner of the cover. It was all rusty round there, and the two just underneath the windscreen too. The drain is under the pollen housing, you can see where it is with a torch. Mine were ok but I've replaced the mesh on the plenum cover to stop leaves etc. getting in and blocking it up.
I put silicon all around the screw holes and on top of the screws once they were put back. Checked it yesterday after days of heavy rain and underneath the carpet is dry, as is the pollen filter. Good luck
