Anybody know what changing a rotary controller involves please ?

Do you mean the rotary coupler/clock spring?

If so, yes it's easy. Remove the air bag, then the steering wheel, then the coupler. The hardest part is getting a new one, as they've been NLA for several years.
 
I think be careful when removing the airbag! Disconnect the battery and leave it for 30 mins before doing any work!

I've never touched the one on mine, but I believe there are unused 'tracks' on the coupler and people have shifted the wire that isn't working to an unused track. I may have just made that up though - worth a search.
