What is the link between the radio, satnav and cd changer?
1999 P38, Philips car-in satnav. Screen shows "No cd installed - install now" Do that and it spits out the cd and reverts to original message. Radio lights up and thats it, no sound. CD changer below HK unit just sits, does nothing. Help, please oh and keep it simple if possible!!!!!
Thanks

Don't know much about it, but only link i can think of is the radio is muted when sat nav messages are read.

I think wammers is right in that the Sat Nav mutes the radio when it's giving directions.
It is a correct and genuine CD you're putting in the Sat Nav isn't it? They don't accept later DVDs. (And you're not putting it in the CD changer? - have to ask)
I rarely use mine and I'm not at home at the moment to test it so I can't say for sure what the effects would be but I don't think it should mute the radio just because it doesn't have a CD in.
What happens if you switch the Sat Nav off using the knob by the screen?. Do you get the radio back then?
Has the battery been disconnected recently that you know of? These Sat Nav units are prone to being damaged if the battery is disconnected before they've finished shutting down. There's been a few instances on here where that's happened and it's caused a permanent mute on the radio. This looks like what you have. If that's the case, you may need a new Sat Nav.
I think there's three units to the Sat Nav if I remember what someone else said on here correctly. The CD unit in the rear, the Sat Nav computer itself under the centre console and the 'head' unit in the dash. Which part 'goes' to be honest I'm not sure between the CD and the computer. I also couldn't tell you where you would get it repaired either I'm afraid.
You should be able to 'de-mute' the radio by unplugging the sat nav, probably on the computer.
Sorry I can't be of more help. I've never had cause to play with mine.
Good luck.

Thanks to both respondees. Pressing the knob next to the screen just makes it swap between the "attention" notice and the "No cd" comment on the screen. I don't know if the battery has been recently disconnected, I only bought the car a couple of weeks ago, and guess what? the seller doesn't respond to any of my enquiries!!!!- and it is too far to go to visit.
I've tried the several and various fuses, all were ok. Unplugging the satnav unit in the rear (in which the disc is installed) hasn't made any difference, either. I also tried unplugging the radio, hoping it might "default" to normal, but no joy.
Although it's not the end of the world these things not working, the car is only my "toy" but if it's there it ought to work in my book!
Again, thanks anyway - back to the drawingboard!

OK, try looking under the centre console around where the window switches are. That's where another masochist on here said it was. The radio mute will probably come from this unit. Either that or 'temporarily' snipping the mute wire at the rear of the radio.
You should still be able to switch the Satnav off though on the front panel controls. I doubt it has a dedicated fuse as it was a bit of an add-on at the time.

heres a new spin on the Sat nav of death white screen !
I had the battery replaced and the nob blew my satnav, ok radio muted so I unplug the sat nav and have a fully working radio, cd and sub.

A week ago i went over a bump and every thing went off radio wise , plugged the sat nav back in and i have 'muted' sound the rear and nothing to the front !!!

andy ideas folks ??

all fuses checked !! thanks , Andy
