Think some Sony units come with a remote stalk which you can screw to the steering wheel plastic casing
Suspect that"s not quite what you're after

Sony radios have an optional stalk you can fit to the column, but they come with a little remote, which is easier.
But I have to agree, there are buttons on the front of most radios

Bearing in mind its a defender where you have to contort yourself to apply the handbrake and remove your left arm to turn right, then you get eye strain trying to read the insturments at night or look in the vibrating rear view mirror I dont think personally Id be too worried at reaching out to the radio but we are all different I suppose.
